Married, mom of two, history PhD, feminist. I've been participating in Cannonball Read since CBR4. I love to read, and writing reviews keeps me from reading without thinking. I feel like I owe it to the authors who entertain me to savor their creations. It's like slowing down and enjoying a delicious meal instead of bolting your food. Maybe pick one story and tell it well?

A True Account: Hannah Masury’s Sojourn Amongst the Pyrates, Written by Herself: A Novel by Katherine Howe

April 9, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

A True Account is actually two stories. One is set in Cambridge Massachusetts, circa 1930,  with Radcliffe College professor Marian Beresford and her undergraduate student Kay Lonergan. Kay has found a manuscript by a female pirate named Hannah Masury. The second story is how in 1726 Hannah went from being a common serving girl in Boston to part of a pirate crew looking for a buried treasure. Author Katherine Howe provides an enormous amount of fascinating information about pirates and life in the colonies in […]

A banned novel about WWI, conscientious objectors and gays

Despised and Rejected by Rose Allatini

March 29, 2025 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Despised and Rejected is a 1918 novel by Rose Allatini (using the pen name AT Fitzroy) that was banned and pulled off the market for being ‘morally unhealthy’ following a trial of its publisher CW Daniel. The Gay Men’s Press republished the novel in 1988 and the Persephone Press edition that I read came out in 2018. Set during WWI, the novel’s main characters are a bisexual woman named Antoinette and a gay man named Dennis who is also a conscientious objector. The novel begins […]

Losing Oneself in Art

Infinity Net: The Autobiography of Yayoi Kusama by Yayoi Kusama

March 23, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Yayoi Kusama is one of the most prolific and successful artists of our time. This Japanese born creative genius was a major force on the New York art scene in the sixties, producing interactive installations, performance pieces, and a variety of other artistic offerings. Yet most people are probably more familiar with her contemporaries, like Andy Warhol. In this autobiography published in 2002 (English translation in 2012), Kusama provides some information about her childhood and upbringing, but this is mostly the story of her art […]

A haunting story on many levels

Anita de Monte Laughs Last: A Novel by Xochitl Gonzalez

March 5, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

I read this novel as an e-book purchased through Bookshop.org. If you, like me, have been relying on Kindle e-books for a while and want to stop supporting that dickhead Bezos, check out Bookshop. They have a selection of e-books that is somewhat limited but they are very good offerings nonetheless. Moreover, when you make a purchase, Bookshop will donate a percentage of the sale to the independent bookstore of your choice. Buying books has never felt more virtuous! Anita de Monte Laughs Last is, […]

A complicated mix of a story

Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson

March 2, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Black Cake is a novel that I’ve seen favorably reviewed over the past few years, and according to its cover, has been made into a Hulu series. I can understand why Hulu would be drawn to this story. Black Cake involves colonialism, racism, generational misunderstanding and trauma, and resilience. The novel itself is set up with alternating points of view, the most compelling being that of Eleanor Bennett. She has died and left behind for her children a recording in which she reveals astounding secrets […]

Sit up and take note

Thick and Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom

February 20, 2025 by ElCicco 2 Comments

Tressie McMillan Cottom is an academic (Sociologist) who also writes for the New York Times and has appeared on The Daily Show. Thick was published in 2019 and was a finalist for the National Book Award. It is a collection of essays on race, gender, politics and culture that are meticulously researched and brilliantly argued. This is the kind of collection that bears taking your time to read. McMillan Cottom gives the reader a lot to think about and made me rethink things I thought […]
