The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

April 28, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Updated review 04/28/2025: I needed this book to count for a reading challenge so I happily re-read it. I also, because I am, bought the graphic novel of the Hobbit this weekend during Independent Bookstore Day and of course, promptly read that. Honestly, I loved this book when I read it in school, and enjoyed my re-read of it, ten years ago. I also laughed at  lot more while re-reading. I totally blanked on how Gandalf messed with Bilbo and then he was awash in […]

The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig

The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig

April 19, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

Please note I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This was honestly a nail biter of a horror story (pun intended, you will get that after you read about one of the main characters). I thought that it was nicely set up, Wendig did a good job of staying firmly in the past until he jumped forward again to the present, and the explanation behind the staircase was a scary and sad one all put together. I also […]

The Book Club for Troublesome Women by Marie Bostwick

The Book Club for Troublesome Women by Marie Bostwick

April 16, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley, this did not affect my rating or review. This was such a great book to read in the current environment, however, the ending just didn’t stick, and I think that if Bostwick had left that part of the book alone the book would have been a 5 star favorite with me. “The Book Club for Troublesome Women” takes place in 1963 in a Virginia town called Concordia (just think close to Alexandria and D.C. The book […]

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

April 14, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

I really did love this combination of interesting facts about plants, trees, and animals linked to the author’s memories. Nezhukumatathil begins the book describing a catalpa tree, a tree that she links to her memories of living in Kansas while her mother worked at a hospital. Most of the animals and plant/trees she recalls are often linked to her constant moving as a child and then from her moves as an adult with her husband and two sons. Some of the memories linked are sad, […]

I Don’t Believe in Astrology by Debra Silverman, M.A.

I Don't Believe in Astrology by Debra Silverman

April 7, 2025 by Classic 4 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Honestly, this isn’t a bad book, but it wasn’t as helpful as I thought it would be. I was intrigued by this being a therapist’s guide to astrology, but honestly, some of the things for Aquarius do not apply to me at all. For example, I always laugh at it when someone says oh you are quirky and love technology….I loathe technology and my team of 20 somethings […]

The Maid’s Secret by Nita Prose

The Maid's Secret by Nita Prose

April 7, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. I really hope this is the last book in the “Molly the Maid” series. The first book was so good, and I loved how it ended on a darker note, but two more books and a novella, the series has definitely pushed towards lighter mysteries that you can solve in five minutes. My main issue with this last book is that the sections that focused on Gram/Flora were […]
