My little piggy needed something new.

Pearl by Josh Malerman

February 15, 2022 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

“Sing for me, Brother Jeff. Sing for Pearl.” There is something unsettling about Walter Kopple’s farm out on Murdock Road. Something that makes you drive a little faster when going past, that makes you feel a bit like you walked through cobwebs. Jeff and Aaron don’t like visiting their grandfather’s farm because of the way it feels. They know, as does everyone, something is wrong at the farm. Something is wrong with the pigs and the large male who lords over them, Pearl. Pearl with […]

Mum’s the Bird

Malorie by Josh Malerman

December 27, 2021 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

Malorie is the sequel to Bird Box, which I had the pleasure of reading/reviewing in January 2020. Spoiler Alert: Bird Box ends with the discovery of a seemingly successful safe haven, a school for the blind, which is reached by Malorie and her two six-year old children after a harrowing trip down a river, blind. This book continues her plight, instead this time it’s a blind train rather than a blind boat. But I’m skipping ahead. In the opening pages of Malorie, we learn that […]

Night of the Mannequins – 3/5 Stars – Stephen Graham Jones This is a newish novella from Stephen Graham Jones that you’ll have to roll with the bad title and go with it because it does some very interesting things. It has a significant flaw by the end, and the way I will describe that is that it either doesn’t trust the audience or trust itself to make the more interesting choice. The plot involves a group of teenagers, friends and frenemies, who friend works […]

Bird Box by Josh Malerman

January 1, 2020 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Technically, I finished this book about an hour before the calendar ticked over to 2020, but it still counts to CBR12! The fact that I was reading that late on NYE gives you an insight into the intensity of this book. I simply couldn’t put it down as it reached it’s crescendo. Bird Box is a psychological paranormal thriller about the end of the world, told through the eyes and ears of Malorie – a women holding it all together for the sake of those […]

A Worthy Followup to Bird Box

Inspection: A Novel by Josh Malerman

August 21, 2019 by MrsLangdonAlger 2 Comments

Before I start, I realize my title here may be slightly misleading: don’t get excited, this book is not a sequel to Bird Box. It’s just another book by the same writer. But if you liked Bird Box, I think you’ll like this. This is going to be really hard to describe without giving too much away, because part of what’s great about this book is the slow revelation of what’s really going on. I’m going to be very careful not to include major spoilers […]

Bird Box – The Post-Apocalyptic Book that Dreams (Nightmares) Are Made of

Bird Box by Josh Malerman

March 3, 2019 by ardaigle Leave a Comment

I discovered this book all on my own, a little unknown unassuming book at the library. (Jk. This book is everywhere). Unless you’ve been gone in some remote location you have heard of this book, or at least, heard of the Netflix movie of the same name, starring America’s favorite FBI beauty contestant, the delightful Sandra Bullock. Sandra is having a pretty bad time though, in his post-apocalyptic dystopian nightmare, where the sight of something, some unknown creature, drives people almost instantly mad and violent […]
