All Hallows by Christopher Golden

All Hallows by Christopher Golden

Honestly this is a 3.5 star read for me, but since I don’t like to do half stars, I rounded up to 4. I think that parts of this horror novel works, but I wish we had more explanation for the Cunning Man, Mother, etc. I don’t want an info dump, but some parts of the book felt unfinished and when we get to the end I thought, well heck so we don’t get any explanations? Also after a while, the book just jumped around […]

I am a big fan of horror all year round, so I am going to be that person right now and be all “Ghost stories at Christmas are Victorian tradition!”  And they were, and I like to embrace this particular tradition.  There are 17 creepy seasonal horror stories in this book, so next year if I am on the ball I might even be able to set up a spooky reading advent-ish adventure for myself. This collection is not just about Christmas, other winter holidays […]

Heartbreakingly, aggravatingly, not for me.

Ararat by Christopher Golden

I wanted to post this as its own review because reading and thinking about this book made me so mad that it spurred me to catch up on my reviews just so I could talk about this stupid awful book. I’m being mean because I was so hopeful at the beginning and so let down so quickly. Ararat by Christopher Golden is about an archeological/documentary/explorer crew who, while on a dig documenting what appears to be Noah’s Ark thousands of feet above sea level on […]

CBR11 #4: Pretending to Care

The Pretenders (Cemetery Girl #1) by Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden

March 4, 2019 by Siege Leave a Comment

I wanted to like this, but…I just didn’t. I don’t know if it was too short, or whether it would have more appeal for a YA audience, but I was just kind of bored. Calexa Rose finds herself dumped in a graveyard, with no memory of her identity, and only the knowledge that someone tried to kill her. She can also see ghosts. She makes herself at home in the cemetery, trying to hide out from whomever tried to kill her, while attempting to find […]

I think there is more visibility for stories with older and middle aged women. I’m here for it.

I'm really enjoying what feels like an increase in good stories about middle aged women. Maybe they just didn't come...
