The Shepherd King duology: power through the first book, it’s all worth it for the second

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig

December 28, 2023 by Malin 5 Comments

One Dark Window: 3 stars Two Twisted Crowns: 4 stars Spoiler warning! Some minor spoilers for One Dark Window in this review. 20-year-old Elspeth Spindle (all the noble families have surnames taken from trees) lives in the kingdom of Blunder, most of which is now enveloped in a thick, sinister fog. Most people who venture out into the fog without a talisman (bones, feathers, animal feet, braided horsehair, etc) go mad and run off into the forest, never to be seen again. The only ones who seem […]

The book "Warehouse Dreams" by Theresa Halverson standing next to a book bingo card.

The author told me it was a bit like X-Men and I agree! But would add there is a dash of Gattaca too. – CBR14 Bingo: Minds

Warehouse Dreams by Theresa Halvorsen

July 28, 2022 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: “Minds” – Many of the characters in this book are telepathic and psychokinetic. I love visiting the small press and publisher areas at conventions.  At Wonder Con this past Spring, I had a conversation with author Theresa Halvorsen and she convinced me to buy her book Warehouse Dreams.  She described it as a bit X-Men, as it has genetically superpowered people, and a bit Harry Potter because it is set in a school for powered kids.  I would add there is a dose […]

My little piggy needed something new.

Pearl by Josh Malerman

February 15, 2022 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

“Sing for me, Brother Jeff. Sing for Pearl.” There is something unsettling about Walter Kopple’s farm out on Murdock Road. Something that makes you drive a little faster when going past, that makes you feel a bit like you walked through cobwebs. Jeff and Aaron don’t like visiting their grandfather’s farm because of the way it feels. They know, as does everyone, something is wrong at the farm. Something is wrong with the pigs and the large male who lords over them, Pearl. Pearl with […]

Humans still struggling to learn empathy in 25th century

January 26, 2017 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

This one was a friend recommendation as well as a start to my quest for more women-written science fiction, and it did not disappoint. Cat is a psion, a “freak” born of the socially forbidden union between a human and a Hydran, a race of telepathic aliens who have been exterminated by humans. His telepathic powers make him feared and hated, even though a past trauma has left him unable to access his psion abilities. He is recruited/coerced/blackmailed into taking a job as a glorified […]

I know all there is to know about the Lion Game…

February 1, 2016 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

Okay, that’s not true at all. I know very little about the Lion Game. This book is only 157 pages, and it could have used a few more. A lot is packed into those pages. It starts out well, but then it feels like a snowball gaining momentum down a hill, and I’m not sure I followed everything in the second half. Although I do know this. See exhibit A, our heroine, Telzey: She is 15. FIFTEEN. Way to go, 1973! Anyway. Telzey has psi […]
