I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry

My Cannonball Read holiday gift exchange buddy got me this book (thank you!!!) and if they picked it because they have read it and liked it or just took a crack at my taste from my Goodreads, I’m pretty sure we would be good pals. I don’t remember (or know) who that was, so if you see this and it’s you, find me on the ‘gram at @cheerbrarian. It’s 1989 and the Danvers High Varsity field hockey team hasn’t historically been award winning, but this […]

The Guncle (The Guncle #1) by Steven Rowley

April 29, 2025 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This was the monthly library selection for my local library book club, I hadn’t heard of it, but was excited to read it because a LOT of our content this year has been HEAVY including women feet binding, mental illness, racism (actually THREE books where racism/discrimination was a central theme) and mortality. Now that I think about it, um, Schaumburg Library you doing okay? But I digress. I hung a lot of hopes on this book for some lightness and laughs and it delivered. It […]

Cover of James by Percival Everett noting it is a Pulitzer Prize finalist

James by Percival Everett

April 27, 2025 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

I heard from multiple people that James was THE BOOK to read last year, and it was on a lot of best of lists, so I was exicted to give it a read. It fully hooked me from the first sentence “Those little bastards were hiding out there in the tall grass.” I didn’t have a lot of expectations about this book, but having me chuckle from the start was a surprise. This is a retelling of the classic tale Huck Finn but from the […]

“These are the times in her life that Louise has felt most acutely the animal nature of her humanity, and therefore they have been the most comforting. To be a human is complex, and often painful; to be an animal is comfortingly simple and good.”

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

March 27, 2025 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

It’s early, coming up on the end of March, but this book is in the running for my top book of the year. Everyone I know who has read this book has told me it is amazing. Everyone I know was telling me the truth, and now I keep recommending it to everyone else. One important caveat first, I do NOT think this book really works as an audiobook. Each chapter you are jumping characters and timelines and I could not follow it for the […]

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

March 27, 2025 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I cannot stop recommending this audiobook to people! It is twisty and dark and funny and surprising. I’m not sure if it would work in original book form, because the neat device about this book is that it’s a book, but also a podcast. I know, wait what? But it works so well! Five years ago Lucy’s best friend Savvy was murdered. Lucy was found covered in her blood, with no memory of what happened of the event. Everyone in her small town was quick […]

The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb

March 27, 2025 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

This book was the “One Book One Community” pick from my local library, wherein they pick a book, all of the book clubs read it, and they bring the author in to give a talk. They have a pretty good track record with me, picking something that I enjoy, and this year was no different. This debut novel walks a delicate line where it covers a lot of groud, but does so evenly which makes for a balanced and interesting novel. It’s a compelling mystery […]
