Recently (via email) I met someone who actually goes out and helps wood frogs and salamanders at night cross the road. I had heard about this, but never knew someone who actually did it. This person recommended their book Is It Time, Yet? (by Lynn Levine and Dirk Steinhoefel). I will be finding a copy of it soon. But in the meantime, I found Pufflings Fly Free!: A Rescue Tale from Iceland by Colleen Paeff and illustrated by Linda Ólafsdóttir.
This book is basically the same idea, but for puffins of Iceland. I had started reading my online reader before, but was not in the right mind set for it. Then the other day, I found a few moments and got into it. I was terribly excited as, while it makes perfect sense, it was not something I would have ever thought of. The concept is simple, the Puffin Patrol will go out on certain nights to help the young puffins who have somehow gotten off course and landed in town and not the ocean. The people of the town, many children, go out and gather them, process them and release them. The story follows a young girl and her quest to have a solo catch.
The illustrations are cute, fun, colorful, not overly realistic but not cartoonish or abstract. They are cozy. They are nice. They help show the story and are supporting characters as well. They are clever as well as a good background for the tale. They really capture things and while we do not get to see a lot about the actual setting of Westman Islands, Iceland; you can find out more at the end of the book about many other things.
You can get your copy in June 2026 or find an online copy like I did.
