Seriously, this is a fun, rhyming poetry book about being yourself, being a little different and having fun. While having the setting of witches and an overall Halloween feel, it works well for anytime of the year. The overall feeling is quaint, but not saccharine or in any negative connotation of the word. It reminds me of 1970s fun, kid-aimed witchy poems, but is completely now. There are diverse looking witches. Granted they are all presented as females, but they are in wheelchairs, fly on brooms, have raccoons and lizards and monkeys as familiars, are independent, helpful, and come in different colors, hair styles, shapes, sizes, and talents (one is even a performer).
The illustrations are busy and can be a bit crowded, but at the same time, things move and are smooth. The colors are slightly muted, but not dull and the look is natural colors (browns and reds really stick out, but all mesh into the other). I get an autumn overall feeling. The folktale vibes and the poetry give a flow to things that allows for a more traditional sounding story, but allows each character to be separate from the others.
Maybe Wacky Witches will not become a classic, but it is something that will stick with you. Due later September 2024, this was read via an online reader copy.
