Come for the plot, stay for the doggo. Is how Let’s Play Volumes One and Two promote themselves. This two-book series is only the first 40 or so episodes of a web comic from WebToon. This website allows you to read graphic novel/comics online. However, some of the more popular titles are getting in real life editions made. I sat down on a Saturday to start reading book one and was done sometime on Sunday as I had to sleep.
Leeanne M. Krecic created a fun story about gamers, vlogging, life, love, friends, and pets (the doggo, Bowser who is an adorable derpy pup!). This clever introduction to the world of gaming will be easy to understand for the person not in the know, but also will keep those who do know glued to the page. We follow Samantha (Sam) a shy, geeky, lovable, sweet, not so assertive gamer/programmer as she tries to get through the everyday events we face. She works in her father’s company, she lives next to the hot vlogger who destroyed her first game she created, her boss has interesting ideas about office etiquette and her best friends love her, will fight for her (might even kill if the situation is right) and at least one wants to date her.
This romantic, slightly comic plot line grabbed my attention from page one. The art was bold, bright, colorful, simple but expressive and the combination of a traditional comic with anime overtones and manga was a hoot. I would usually find that hard to deal with, but it was perfect for the antics of our gang. Volume two continues these misadventures.
I even deleted several items on my phone I probably needed to download WebToons to find out what happens!
