Back then we prayed to the gods and went on killing sprees. Now we have Zoloft.

Fit for the Gods: Greek Mythology Reimagined by Jenn Northington and S. Zainab Williams

July 15, 2023 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Zoraida Cordova knows what’s what. Her story, “The Gorgon Confessionals,” opens Fit for the Gods by imagining that the gods, immortals, heroes and villains of Greek mythology are regenerating into the modern world, they have their memories, but not necessarily their powers. Through a documentary series, Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy, is examining the story of Medusa and Perseus through a series of interviews. Zeus is a Republican candidate for President. (Vote Hades!). The stories by two of my favorite authors, Suleikha Snyder and Alyssa Cole […]

“The earth has turned. The time is here. I am dying. Come and collect your inheritance.”

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova

September 1, 2022 by narfna 2 Comments

I tell you what, I’ve really been putting off writing this review. I just don’t want to try and put words to the subconscious magic this book can work upon a reader. And also the literal magic that is in the book. (An old woman turns into a tree! Flowers grow out of people’s bodies!) I’m really not going to talk much about the plot here because it’s way better to be surprised, but I will say that the book starts out with all of […]

Magic realism for the win

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova

March 23, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I always think I should read more magic realism–it would probably be a great gateway drug for me to read more fiction (not that there is anything wrong with reading genres that give you joy! down the drab hegemony that insists you must only read boring Pretentious Literature that is impossible to parse and full of unhappy people doing unhappy things). It would also probably be a great way for me to read more Latin American/South American/Mexican/Latin(e)(x) literature, because–for reasons I do not know, and […]

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina

Magical realism at its most wonderful

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova

October 29, 2021 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

BINGO – Flora (there’s a small flower at the center of the cover and Orquídea means ‘orchid’ in Spanish) The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina is told with two narratives: one of the past life of Orquídea Divina, matriarch of the Montoya family and the other of the Montoya family in present day. Orquídea is dying and she summons her family to her home to receive their inheritance. The family gathers and soon realize that no one is getting the family cuckoo clock or heirloom jewelry. No, Orquídea […]

Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite by Zoraida Cordova & Natalie Parker (editors)

October 24, 2021 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

My Halloween read this year is this collection of new vampire tales edited by the team of Zoraida Cordova and Natalie Parker. I enjoy vampire stores because they offer so many different views onto the human condition, if you go looking for them. In Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite Cordova and Parker, along with the assembled authors, take the time to dig in and explore these angles – with postscripts by Cordova and Parker after each story. Let’s handle individual stories in […]

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina

“What broke your heart so completely that its splinters found their way through generations?”

The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova

CBR13Bingo: Uncannon a beautiful work of fantasy that tells one story of generational trauma in fantastical terms Magical realism isn’t usually my thing, but I couldn’t resist that unbelievably gorgeous cover. And I am ever so glad I picked this book up. It’s about generational trauma and making a home and family secrets, about how bringing those secrets into the light can wound and heal. “Orquídea was so many things: evasive, silent, mean, secretive, loving, and a liar.” Orquídea Montoya was born unlucky, but early on she […]
