Clever Conceit That Mostly Works

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

September 6, 2026 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Rating: 3.5 In a nutshell: Sybil is a retired, divorced law clerk who writes letters (and occasionally emails) to pretty much anyone and everyone. We get a look at the letters she sends (and receives) over the course of a decade. Best for: Those who enjoy small stories that take place over longer periods of time. Quote that made me think: N/A (which is kind of surprising) Why I chose it: Book club. Review: This is an interesting way to tell someone’s story. It is […]

the book that snapped me out of my funk

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

August 19, 2026 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Bird, because this has birds on the cover (that counts, right?) hot take: This book grows up and becomes Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. longer take: so that’s the wrong title entirely and the wrong book, and now I’ve read the Wikipedia summary for said book I’m not going to go read it. Whoops all around. The book I was actually thinking about is Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, which is also about a slightly unpleasant older woman who’s reckoning with her past and how it’s impacted […]

The Audiobook Was Better

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

July 8, 2026 by lafocareta 1 Comment

Back before the hype blew up around The Correspondent, I tried to read it in print and had to quit after a few pages: the pacing was too slow for me and the MC wasn’t interesting enough to follow along with. After it became popular, reading it became a professional obligation, I decided to try the audiobook. This is my favorite strategy for books that aren’t wowing me in print, but that Must Be Read for whatever reason. It worked.  What seemed dreary and tedious on […]

A minority opinion: This book is fine

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

June 6, 2026 by KimMiE" 1 Comment

Last month I went away for a long weekend and stopped in a lovely little independent book store with a great backstory. Predictably, being away on holiday coupled with an adorable shop put me in book-buying mode, so when I spotted The Correspondent, its enticing cover and knowing it received so many excellent reviews compelled me to buy it. I love independently owned book shops, so I feel good about this purchase. The book itself turned out to be in the “could have been a […]

I don’t know why I love epistolary novels so much

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

March 22, 2026 by Sophia 1 Comment

I’ve always enjoyed a good epistolary novel, and The Correspondent (2025) by Virginia Evans is no different. I saw The Correspondent on a number of year-end, best-of lists and decided to give it a try. I figured an old lady writing a bunch of letters would be a slow, contemplative novel. I was wrong. Although The Correspondent was contemplative, the story was surprisingly compelling. I had a hard time putting this book down. The Correspondent begins with 73-year-old Sybil Van Antwerp writing to her brother, who lives in France. It is 2012 […]

Letters, We Get Letters

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

January 12, 2026 by jeverett15 2 Comments

As suggested by the title, The Correspondent is presented as a collection of letters. Most of them are written by Sybil Van Antwerp, a retired lawyer and chief clerk for a federal judge. At the start of the book, Sybil is living alone, having divorced her husband years before. She has a contentious relationship with her daughter Fiona, an architect living in London. Sybil has been a lifelong proponent of letter-writing, and has kept up the practice to the annoyance of many of her friends […]
