So far behind.

Wheels No Wheels by Shannon McNeill

My Lala by Thomas King, Ill by Charlene Chua

Baby Squeaks by Anne Hunter

Guys, you wouldn’t believe how many books I’ve read but haven’t reviewed yet this year. Particularly NetGalley books, which means I can’t request new ones, which is unacceptable. So let’s do some mental spring cleaning, & get these books reviewed.   Wheels, No Wheels by Shannon McNeill is a silly-nonsense book that I would have easily incorporated into my pre-k transportation unit lesson plans. Starts with a very simple breakdown of things like “A tractor has wheels. A llama has no wheels.” and quickly devolves […]

A non-fiction catch all, although these books aren’t really related to one another in any way…

The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race by Walter Issacson

Humble Pi: A Comedy of Math Errors by Matt Parker

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach

The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America by Thomas King

The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race These are usually the only types of non-fiction that I will read: non-fiction about science or math or healthcare, doubling down on my nerdy persona. This book in particular was recommended to me by a colleague who mentioned reading it during a meeting. This is a long book, and as another colleague said, it might not be his best. My rationale for why is this: I think that the combination of […]

Current events, old story

Borders by Thomas King

September 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My reader copy of Borders by Thomas King was not finished, therefore, most of my feelings of the book come from an incomplete galley with missing illustrations. I would have liked to see more closely some of the emotions and actions the art of Natasha Donovan would have shown as this would have made the reading a bit smoother. However, I enjoyed this book and will look for it when it comes out to reread it in a completed state. The artwork is what moves […]

Scathing indictments lightly cloaked in humorous, beautifully written prose.

The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America by Thomas King

Can’t recommend this one highly enough. A lot of books are required reading (or should be) for subject matter alone, but this book has the one-two punch of being about something educational and important that everyone living in a colonized country that used to belong to native peoples should read, and also being entertaining and extremely well-written. I finished the introduction and said out loud (to my cat), “I already love this.” Or maybe it was a Goodreads status update. Either is likely. It’s been […]

The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King

August 9, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Thomas King is a dual American-Canadian citizen of mixed heritage (Wikipedia lists Cherokee, German and Greek backgrounds), and he identifies strongly with his Cherokee heritage.  He is also quite the storyteller, in the best possible way. King starts his “account” of North American history by refusing to label it as a history- noting, in fact that all histories are “stories we tell about the past”.  He provides a sweeping overview of Indian-White relations in the US and Canada, in more or less chronological (though expressly […]
