We took you out from your mother’s womb; Our temple, your tomb

July 21, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

This book is a sequel, and this review may contain spoilers for the first book in the series, Cinder. I was initially surprised to see the direction Meyer chose to go when continuing her series, The Lunar Chronicles, in that she introduced a new protagonist and switched between character POVs, rather than just sticking with Cinder’s. A lot of time, this is a YA contrivance that bothers me somewhat, because it’s frequently a shortcut into another character’s emotions without having to write them descriptively (e.g. […]

Once you gone tech you ain’t never going back

July 21, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Reading Cinder was a great way to get back on the YA train after my last misadventure. It’s actually well-written in addition to being well paced and having a heroine who doesn’t completely suck (the opposite, in fact — Cinder is a total badass.) The long and short of it is this: set in the future in “New Beijing”, the story is a retelling of Cinderella, except our title character is a cyborg. If that sounds awesome, it’s because it is, but the citizens of […]

I believe Keith Olbermann would call Levana “the worst person in the world”

May 5, 2015 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

Have you read Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles, and found yourself thinking, hey, I really hate that nasty Queen Levana…I wonder what makes her tick? If yes, then have I got a story for you. Fairest is a novella that ties itself in with the Lunar Chronicles, and it fits nicely in place after Cress and before the upcoming Winter. And its all about why Levana is such a nasty, conniving, emotionless bitch. Yes, I’m sorry that some terrible things happened to her as a child, and […]

Mirror, mirror and all that stuff, except ON THE MOON!

February 18, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Once upon a time there was a little girl, a princess, born on the moon. No, not that princess. The other one. The one who grows up to be the evil, baby-killing psychopath who brings a literal plague to Earth and is now using it to control diplomatic relations so she can, you know, take over and stuff. Fairest is a novella-length attempt at a much-needed fleshing out of Levana’s backstory and motivations, Levana being the villain from Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series. If you haven’t […]

Cress, Cress, let down your hair!

June 21, 2014 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

I’m still so far behind in my reviews, I’m starting to get anxious about it. We are leaving for a month-long vacation next week, and I just might not be able to get a chance to say everything I want and need to say. Sorry that these next few might not get the detail that they deserve 🙁 Even thought it feels like ages ago, I think it was only about two weeks ago that I finished Cress. For those that don’t know (which, really, […]

Space Rapunzel is a socially mal-adjusted hacker and I love her.

“When she was just a child, the witch locked her away in a tower that had neither doors nor stairs.” Guys, I can’t give out another five star rating this year. I just can’t. But I almost did with this anyway. It was THISCLOSE. I’m going with 4.5 stars for now, but I reserve the right to change my mind upon re-read. I just really really enjoyed myself while reading this, probably more than I should have. Cress, the third volume of The Lunar Chronicles, is […]
