The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield

January 21, 2026 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

I don’t remember how I learned about this book. All I know is that it sat in my Libby holds from March 2023 until last month. When I first added it, I was something like 282nd in line. Periodically, I toyed with the idea of taking it off my list. I also thought that perhaps it was less crazy to just buy it. I’m glad I didn’t. There is nothing wrong with this book. The content matches the blurb on the cover. However, as in […]

A Creative Ass Kicking

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

February 4, 2024 by Tereasa Leave a Comment

I have a goal this year to balance out my fiction with non-fiction books that will inspire me – or give me “a kick in the ass,” as quoted on the front of The War of Art. I actually meant to reread Do the Work, also by Steven Pressfield, but mis-remembered which book I read previously. While written for writers, Pressfield’s book is filled with creative ‘ass kicking’s’ for anyone who finds themselves putting off the work they should be doing. The War of Art […]

Writing Against Resistance

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

I probably wouldn’t have found this book on my own, but after seeing a strong recommendation from TikTok comedian Lucy Blehar, I added it to my library request list. I’m a writer, but most days, one that actually struggles to sit down and get my fingers typing. I don’t know why that’s such a common trait of writers, that the thing we most want to do is the thing we will do just about anything to avoid. And that’s where this book comes in. Now, […]

“Are you a born writer? Were you put on earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action. Do it or don’t do it.”

Pressfield’s book on pursuing creativity is currently less than $6 in its electronic form, so I used my Christmas money  and picked it up on the recommendation of a creative friend. My buddy owns a coffee shop, plays in bands, and generally pursues the finer things in life. A renaissance man! If he said this was worth a read, I figure it was worth a go. I’m glad I did. While there’s probably nothing groundbreaking in this book, the encouragement to create and be yourself […]
