I had to start this book over again four times before I could get into it, but it was worth it in the end.

The Witness for the Dead (The Goblin Emperor, #2) by Katherine Addison

September 1, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

You’ve really got to give this one a minute. Similarly to the way I felt about Addison’s first novel (under this penname at least) The Goblin Emperor, the names and the naming system and the worldbuilding are A LOT. Unlike with The Goblin Emperor, there is no glossary, and we are not joining a world as the fish out of water along with the main character like we were with Maia in the previous book. Our main character here, Thara Celehar, a Witness for the […]

A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk & Robot, #1) by Becky Chambers

August 5, 2021 by narfna 3 Comments

“. . . the robots left the factories and departed for the wilderness.” “Before long, Dex was no longer nursing something as simple as an odd fancy for a faraway insect. The itch had spread into every aspect of their life. When they looked up at the skyscrapers, they no longer marveled at their height but despaired at their density—endless stacks of humanity, packed in so close that the vines that covered their engineered casein frames could lock tendrils with one another. The intense feeling […]

Stuart Turton is an imaginative little turd. I might be a fan for life. #CBRBINGO – Reader’s Choice

The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton

July 14, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 28/30 This was one of the last books I read in my thirty day book binge, and I think it says something about how good it was that even though I had some book fatigue going on, I happily and quickly finished this in less than two days. It’s not a huge book, but it’s not small, either. Like Turton’s first book, this is a mystery at heart, and also like his first book, there are some complicating factors […]

When I say gross, I mean nasty. Do not read this while eating.

Chew, Vol.1: Taster's Choice by John Layman

July 9, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 21/30 Haha, what a weird, gross book. I liked it. I mean it, if you can’t handle seriously nasty things (mostly involving tasting and smelling, and bodily fluids, and gore) stay away from here. If you’ve got a strong stomach and appreciate a wacky premise, this might be for you. Basically, Tony Chu is a cop, who is a cibopath, meaning he can sense the histories of what he eats. This basically means all he eats is beets in […]

Great premise about a character who is freed from a cult but wants to go back; did not like where he went with it.

First, Become Ashes by K.M. Szpara

June 1, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I am going to continue reading this author’s books because I always find them compelling and interesting, but I think I might have to get the next one from the library instead of buying a pricey hardcover on the back of a tasty premise. This one is making me feel saucy. I was really looking forward to this book! The premise sounded amazing, and I love reading about cults, fictional or not. But the author took it in a direction that I thought was the […]

I have as many emotions inside me as there are genres in this book.

Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1) by Tamsyn Muir

February 26, 2021 by narfna 11 Comments

Please note that although there are no real spoilers in this review, intuitive readers/reviewers might be spoiled anyway because of the way I’m going to say some things. You have been vaguely warned! “Read Gideon the Ninth!” they said. “You’ll love it!” they said. Well, fuck you, I did! I did love it! And I’m so mad and so sad also! It’s been a long time since I let a book get to me like this, and frankly, I blame everyone. I blame the author […]
