Ask Me How I Feel

Tiger Days: A Book of feelings by M. H. Clark

May 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Currently, there are several feelings books, therefore Tiger Days: A Book of feelings gets a little lost in the shuffle. However, the fuzzy cover is fun (though will wear out quickly). The story tries to show feelings by using characteristics of animals to represent how we see feelings. However, instead, it showed me how we interpret different animals to have “human qualities”. Or in a couple cases a more poetic look at qualities they have (the fish is equivalent to sad as there are tears/water […]

“If I have to I can do anything I am strong (strong) I am invincible (invincible)”

I Will Be Fierce by Bea Birdsong

May 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Since there are several books about overcoming your fears, I Will Be Fierce loses a little “punch” to the actual story. However, showing how the everyday can be a bit of a challenge (a bus ride is like facing a multi-headed monster, the big kids are giants, a pack of dogs are dragons) in a mater-of-fact way is slightly unique. And some diversity is shown without “throwing it in your face” or being “preachy” is refreshing. There are kids of all colors, yet not a […]

“The Mad Scene. Enter Ophelia!”

Ophelia by Charlotte Gingras

May 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The only way I can describe this book is: I absolutely hated everything about it AND loved it. Charlotte Gingras brings out emotions of love, hate, disgust and so much more in this translation (by Christelle Morelli and Susan Ouriou) of her book, Ophelia. Sometimes I was rooting for Ophelia and other times I just wanted to smack her. Hard. I felt for her and the difficulties she was going through. I felt she was the most selfish creature on the face of the planet. […]

Felix’s New Skirt by Kerstin Brichzin

May 7, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is another book you can check out if you are looking for a non-gender conforming book, Felix’s New Skirt. Felix is a boy. He likes skirts. He likes how it feels and how easy it is to move in them. He even borrows his sisters. But, of course, people in the neighborhood and his classmates do not accept it. It is not until Felix’s dad finds a solution that things start to work out for everyone. This for the reader who likes books about […]

Rock-a-bye friends in the tree-house top

The Tallest Tree House by Elly MacKay

April 25, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Tallest Tree House by Elly MacKay is one of those books where what you put into it is what you take out of it. You will either really like it, or be “eh, that’s nice.” The Tallest Tree House is a sweet story about friendship and the theme of “a place and time for everything.” And the time to build a tree house is now. But two friends have unique ways of going about making one. One plans and the other rushes about without […]

When life gives you hurdles, lead with your knee

Lu Track #4 by Jason Reynolds

April 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have now come to the final book of Jason Reynolds’ Track series. Lu Track #4 covers the last leg of Ghost, Patina, Sunny and Lu during their time as newbies on a middle-school track and field team. It is bittersweet as I would like to know more, but also it is time to come to the finish line. We follow Lu as his changes include not being a full-time runner but is also doing the hurdles (which, of course, is a metaphor for his […]

I'm not generally into shifter romances, but the title really is awesome.
