Longtime Cannonballers know of my obsession with all things Andrew Smith. From the moment that I first read Grasshopper Jungle I was obsessed with reading as much of this work as I could, as quickly as possible. When I finished his books, I started reading the books that he tweets about and books by friends of his. I discovered AS King and We Are the Ants. So when I saw that the highly lauded Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda actually had a blurb from Smith on the cover, really, I […]

Sometimes it feels like everyone knows who I am except me

August 21, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

Simon Spier, middle child in a very close-knit family is sixteen years old and gay. Not that anyone but his pen pal Blue knows this, until class clown Martin looks over his shoulder at the library and discovers his secret. Simon suddenly finds himself blackmailed. Why didn’t I like this one more?

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda is about sixteen-year old Simon Spier- a closeted drama kid living outside of Atlanta.  Simon has been flirtatiously corresponding with another closeted classmate through anonymous emails for months when he carelessly leaves his private email account logged in at school. Another student, Martin, finds the clandestine correspondence and screen caps the scandalous conversation to blackmail Simon into giving him an “in” with Simon’s friend, Abby. “People really are like house with vast rooms and tiny windows. And maybe it’s […]

Swoon Swoon Swoon

March 2, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

After two good, but grim murder books in a row, I need something lighter and this was the perfect pick. If you want to read something that will make you happy, this is that book. I didn’t think of it until after, but if you like Rainbow Rowell’s books, you’ll probably like Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Although it’s a young adult novel, it’s not dumbed down and the love story will make you swoon just as much as Fangirl or Carry On. Simon […]
