Mrs Caliban: 4/5 Stars This is a re-released novel from 1982, so if you’ve seen the cover but didn’t know about it, like me, perhaps you’ll be excused. It has a wonderfully smart and funny tone to the whole thing. We find our protagonist, a married housewife, doing household chores, thinking about the silence of her marriage, when she hears a news report of an escaped water monster terrorizing the town. She goes on, prepares for her day, and after time, the monster finds her […]

I’ll Definitely Be Reading More By This Author

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

July 12, 2020 by Jen K 3 Comments

Bingo Square: Green (or Jade as a variation thereof) The e-book version of this was on sale back in January, and given my love of mythology, it seemed like the perfect time to try a new author and learn more about mythical figures outside the Greek and Roman pantheon. Still, the book sat quite a while before I finally picked it up. I quite enjoyed this novel – the writing style at first felt very matter of fact, in line with our no nonsense heroine, […]

More of this, please!

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

November 18, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Oh god I’m so behind. I’ve got three more reviews to write after this one and I’m almost done with a fourth book how did I let this happen. Ahhhhhh. But seriously, more of this please. Give me all the non-Euro-centric YA fantasy you got and I will eat it up. Gods of Jade and Shadow dives deep into Mexican-Mayan mythology and I loved literally every second of it. A friend of mine started reading it and I was like OH MY GOD FINISH SOONER SO […]

Riches and Wonders

February 11, 2018 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

What a strange little book. The Beautiful Ones is the story of three people: Antonina “Nina” Beaulieu, her cousin Valerie, and the telekinetic performer Hector Auvray. Hector and Valerie have a tragic romantic history, and when their paths cross again during Nina’s first Grand Season in the big city, she is drawn, unwittingly, into a romantic triangle with the two of them. At its heart, The Beautiful Ones is pretty standard romance. It has some noteworthy trappings, however. It appears to take place during La Belle Epoque, […]

A great start to 2016

January 1, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

This read was a fascinating dive into magical realism, not a genre I frequent very often. The story flips between Mexico City 1988 and Mexico City 2009 from chapter to chapter and centers on a trio of friends. Meche, Sebastian, & Daniela, all fifteen, are the freaks of their high school. They’re on the poor side and not exactly conventionally attractive, but they enjoy each other’s company while longing to rise in social standing. Meche had always been told stories of magic by her grandmother, […]
