Sea monsters, demons, and fae magic

A Witch With No Name by Kim Harrison

One Salt Sea by Seanan McGuire

The Kraken's Sacrifice by Katee Robert

December 31, 2024 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

No half-cannonball for me, but I’ve managed to squeeze in reviews for everything I’ve read in 2024. I’ve been savoring The Hollows series by Kim Harrison like a fine wine. I finally finished her OG urban fantasy and paranormal romance with A Witch With No Name. You have to read these in order, but it’s worth it. The close of the series finds Rachel Morgan once again in hot water with the magical beings of the world. A demon witch who shouldn’t exist will have to […]

Treasures around us

Pearl of the Sea by Anthony Silverston

September 24, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I am finding several online readers that at first glance are not “grabbing me.” (But then again, if a computer grabs you, you have bigger issues than a book not being interesting.)  And, Pearl of the Sea by Anthony Silverston was one of those not at first grabbers. But once I got into it, things started looking up. Now, granted this is not a WOW BEST BOOK EVER! but a book that was a nice break from the fairly intense reads I was reading. […]

Fred forgot three things in a row before he reached the front door on his way to work.

Mrs Caliban by Rachel Ingalls

Puckoon by Spike Milligan

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Sea Monsters by Chloe Aridjis

The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector

Mrs Caliban: 4/5 Stars This is a re-released novel from 1982, so if you’ve seen the cover but didn’t know about it, like me, perhaps you’ll be excused. It has a wonderfully smart and funny tone to the whole thing. We find our protagonist, a married housewife, doing household chores, thinking about the silence of her marriage, when she hears a news report of an escaped water monster terrorizing the town. She goes on, prepares for her day, and after time, the monster finds her […]

This ridiculous book taught me the word ‘mucosal.’ …Yay?

July 19, 2018 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

This was totally silly, but a fun kind of silly! I mean, it tries real hard to be serious and scientific, but no. A book about a bunch of scientists sailing out to the Mariana Trench to find killer mermaids has to be at least a little silly. Years ago, a SyFy channel knock-off sent a bunch of faux-documentarians out to sea to film a search for mermaids. Their ship was found empty, and the recovered footage showed creatures that the world dismissed as hoaxes. […]
