Thought-provoking and … kind of freaky

January 23, 2017 by denesteak 2 Comments

I purchased Story of Your Life and Others after I saw Arrival in theaters, which rocked me to my core, and I wanted to see just how it translated from the page to the screen. The answer? Very differently. For one, Chiang is a lot more technical in his descriptions, and I really appreciate the sparse-ness of his language. He does not use wordy descriptions to manipulate emotions out of his readers; he simply lets the readers draw the parallels between the science-y concepts he talking about […]

Joining the Expanded Universe, one Tie Fighter at a time

January 2, 2017 by DeliriousNM Leave a Comment

Star Wars always fascinated me as a child and I always knew about the expanded universe. Having read the Thrawn Trilogy last year, it was natural that I’d start reading the X-Wing series, specially since those are deeply interconnected. The book shows the formation of the new Rogue Squadron, an elite 12 starship pilot group that has the hardest mission of the Rebel Alliance. Formed by the surviving members of the last Rogue Group that helped destroy the second Death Star and commanded by Wedge […]

Like studying history; Mostly fun but a little boring.

June 22, 2016 by Bea Pants 2 Comments

My actual rating of this book is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. It was an overall enjoyable read but certainly didn’t live up to all the hype surrounding it in the sci fi community. As a history nerd, I also enjoy a well told time travel tale. My two biggest quibbles are that a) the book drags for a hundred pages or so after the inciting incident b) The finale seems a little rushed after slowly building up to it. The basic premise is […]

In pain of a heart forbade to fly. But you learn to say goodbye.

I knew very little about this book going into it other than it was considered to be a Science Fiction classic and that SyFy recently produced a miniseries adaptation of it. When it popped up on sale for $1.99 on Kindle shortly after that, I figured it would be a good time to fill in some of the gaps in my SciFi reading (long story short. My parents were SciFi nerds. I rebelled by being a horror/true crime fanatic). I’m glad I waited until I […]

Ender’s No Good Very Bad Life

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

January 23, 2014 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I have had “Ender’s Game” on my to read list for a while but was a little on the fence because I didn’t really want to spend money on it because of Card’s politics. Lucky for me, my awesome Pajiba gift exchange friend bought it for me, thus I could read it, with no qualms. 🙂 In a world where another attack from an alien race is imminent, children are selected for training to leave their families and prepare for the battle as the ultimate […]
