Who could ever say you’re not simply wonderful?

July 28, 2014 by popcultureboy Leave a Comment

So here’s a funny thing. I have a book by Matt Haig on my “to read” shelf over on Goodreads. It’s called The Dead Fathers Club and it’s on there because a) I am always up for reading modernised novels based on Shakespeare plays (I’m already beside myself about the Hogarth Shakespeare project, but that’s another story) and because b) my father died all too recently. That’s not really the funny thing. The funny thing is, since I bang on about books pretty much all the time […]

Space mermaids, space pirates, and space life insurance underwriters . . . also sexy space banking!

July 21, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

This book is drunk. But like, bear with me and stuff, k? Because there are different types of drunk, and analogously speaking, this is one of the better ones. I’m not talking about one of those slurry, messy drunks, where you couldn’t find your own ass if somebody paid you to. And I’m not talking about mean drunks or black-out drunks or any of those other kinds of drunks that basically make you temporarily worthless as a human being. This is the kind of drunk where […]

Robot sex, and a post-human exploration of slavery.

If nothing else, my experiment in reading Charles Stross for the first time resulted in one of the most unique reading experiences I’ve had in the last couple of years. This book was somewhat of an impulse read. I wanted to read Stross’s Neptune’s Brood, because it was one of the few Hugo noms I hadn’t read yet, but noticed it was the second in a series. All the reviews said you didn’t need to read the first one, but I’m me, and I have […]

CANNONBALL! “Shadow Lord ”: Star Trek Novel Vangie13 cbr #52

May 26, 2014 by Vangie13 9 Comments

by Laurence Yep “I speak from experience,” Mr. Spock said coldly. People are continually asking me to play roles in petty emotional melodramas in which I have asked neither to be cast nor directed.” Well, we go from the wonder and joy of “Uhura’s Song” to this. I don’t know what this is. Prince Vikram, 9th in line to the throne of the planet Angira, was sent to the Federation to study and bring back new modernized ways to his planet. Spock and Sulu travel […]

“Uhura’s Song ”: Star Trek Novel Vangie13 cbr #51

May 25, 2014 by Vangie13 2 Comments

by Janet Kagan “Sivao, where the north star beat like the heart of a child…” An insidious disease is ravaging the Federation. It began on Eeiauo and spread before it was known to be cross-species contagious. On her first mission, Uhura befriended a diplomat/dancer/singer from Eeiauo. They exchanged taboo songs and promised to never tell a soul. Uhura believes these secret songs may hold clues to cure the epidemic. Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise must decipher the songs to cure the plague. […]

“The Vulcan Academy Murders ”: Star Trek Novel Vangie13 cbr #50

May 25, 2014 by Vangie13 6 Comments

by Jean Lorrah “If you cannot be logical, be silent.” We open with a space battle between Enterprise and some Klingons. Chekov is injured. Spock quotes Hamlet. Crewman Remington is mortally injured, completely paralyzed from the skull down, but alive. McCoy can’t cure him, but Spock believes the doctors at the Vulcan Science Academy can. You see, Spock’s mother Amanda has degenerative xenosis. It is like an allergy to living on an alien world and thought to be incurable. A team of doctors at the […]
