Let me tell you about a secret

Nasreen’s Secrete School by Jeanette Winter

September 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Jeanette Winter’s style comes alive in this 2009 picture book, Nasreen’s Secret School: A True Story from Afghanistan. The colors of the illustrations are rich, deep, and plentiful. I have always appreciated how things are fanciful and realistic at the same time. This story is based on the story of a girl of Afghanistan, who of course, has had her and her family names changed to protect everyone. This book has come back into our knowledge due to recent events in the country. Worries that […]

Keeping your Family together

When We Were Alone by David Alexander Robertson

Grandpa’s Girls by Nicola I. Campbell

August 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both books are very different but have the common thread of having a Native American influence, or backdrop. These would be great books to add to any collection. They both are fabulous examples of the meaning of friendship. I preferred When We Were Alone more than Grandpa’s Girls for several reasons. One reason I enjoyed it was the serious tone of the book. This might turn some people off, but even then, David Alexander Robertson has infused a great hopefulness as well. When We Were […]

Yup, he’s not a vampire. Or is he?

Fake Blood by Whitney Gardner

February 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is this book, okay, graphic novel, called Fake Blood. Whitney Gardner is the author and illustrator of this creation. I had seen it over the years on a display here, a list there or on the shelf. But when I was bored one day and was wondering what the library had that I might be interested in, I found it listed (I was perusing their website). I chose five books (with a sixth as a backup in case something was not available) and came […]

Read a little story with me

Your Turn, Adrian by Helena Oberg

May 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Teachers, I think this might be a book for you. It is aimed at the child reader, but I am not sure a kid would appreciate all the subtleness.  Your Turn, Adrian has a story that is simple. All ages can read but the concept is deep. There are illustrations that tell the main story by giving the ambiance of the time, place, people and of course, the main character. While I cannot think of who I could recommend it to, I feel people need […]

Hello, Neighbor!

Hello, Neighbor! The Kind and Caring Words of Mister Rogers by Matthew Cordell

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hello, Neighbor! It is a lovely day in the neighborhood. Or it was when Fred Rogers came on the scene. I think we could use some of Mr. R’s advice these days, but in leu of that, we can read a picture book biography of how it came to be. Hello, Neighbor! The Kind and Caring Words of Mister Rogers is a great look into the world of Rogers. It is a longer picture book that hits on the highlights but leaves nothing out. It […]

Nothing will tricera-top this pun.

The Dinosaur Expert by Margaret McNamara

February 12, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Dinosaur Expert is a nice girl power book dealing with a subject that girls are not usually associated with when it comes to the sciences: Dinosaurs. The only real issue I have with Margaret McNamara’s picture book is the cliché it is a boy that tells our heroine, Kimmy, “girls can’t be scientists.” I think just once, I want the surprise of another girl saying this. Just to mix things up. Part of the Mr. Tiffin’s Classroom series, this book deals with the science […]
