I became a SJM fangirl with A Court of Mist and Fury. I’d read A Court of Thorns and Roses and thought it was decent “girl fantasy” – by which I meant the main protagonist was a young woman and the main plot revolved around a love story (now we’re calling it “romantasy” which I love and loathe in equal measures) – but nothing too amazing. Then Mist and Fury came out and I was hooked. I loved how Maas handled Feyre’s trauma, depression, and […]

CBR15 PASSPORT (Stamp #12: Different Genres, High Fantasy) Forging ahead with the Throne of Glass series. This is the second book and I’m still here for the world-building (I think). I can fly through these books pretty quickly and the plot is interesting enough to keep me going and yet…I’m finding them kind of fluffy and a wee bit repetitive. Not a great sign for book 2 in an 8 book series. I’m interested in how this world fits in with the other Maas book […]

…what terrified him even more was that he trusted her. And he didn’t know what that meant about himself.

CBR15 PASSPORT (Stamp #11: Different Genres, High Fantasy)                                                                          CBR15 BINGO (Violence square: super violent gladiator situation/also the inner turmoil of a young woman trained to be violent from childhood) Not to get too spoilery, but it has become apparent that all three of Maas’ book series (Crown of Thorns […]

An Inauspicious Start to a Series

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

When Feyre kills a wolf while hunting to keep her family alive, she sets in motion a chain of events that leads to her living amongst the Faerie in order to protect her family.  It doesn’t take long for Feyre to realized that there is something sinister lurking that may be a threat to the Faerie and humans alike, and she might hold the key to save them all from doom. It took me a while to get into the story, in part because I […]

Not on the bandwagon for this series

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass sounded promising and it’s been on my list for a while. I finally picked it up; it starts off well, but then it seems to forget about the actual plot and focuses on the romantic possibilities of the incredibly obvious possible triangle between Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian, and the courtly scheming, mostly by two totally underdeveloped characters who might actually rather deserve each other. There is some supernatural evil looming in the background the whole time, but that too is pretty predictable […]

Faeries, Beasts, and a Whole New World

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

When I picked up A Court of Thorns and Roses from my local library, I wasn’t sure what kind of journey it would take me on. With a full cast of humans, faeries, and other mystical beasts, it seemed right up my alley. I devoured it in a single day. The first in a series of books, ACOTAR opens in the human world and focuses on Feyre. A young woman caring for her ailing father and two sisters, Feyre is hardened to the world around her. […]
