CBR15 PASSPORT (Stamp #12: Different Genres, High Fantasy)
Forging ahead with the Throne of Glass series. This is the second book and I’m still here for the world-building (I think). I can fly through these books pretty quickly and the plot is interesting enough to keep me going and yet…I’m finding them kind of fluffy and a wee bit repetitive. Not a great sign for book 2 in an 8 book series. I’m interested in how this world fits in with the other Maas book series. So, I think I will trudge on because I hope that we’re starting to get somewhere. If anyone feels the need to advise me otherwise, please speak up. I have 6 more to go and I’m sort of on the fence at this point.
After winning the battle to become the King’s Champion, Celaena goes back to her sneaky assassin-y roots. In between delivering the severed heads from the monarch’s hit list (or a comparable head, let’s not bicker), a lot is going on. Sexy time shenanigans, ancient language learning, rebellion busting, and super secret passageway finding are a lot to fit into a day alongside all the murder-for-hire business.
Yes, it’s kind of predictable. Yes, the love triangle gets a little tired. Yes, I often found myself breezing through paragraphs that I’m not sure I read. And, yes, the world-building here is still kind of murky. It would be easy to cry YA here, but we all know how great YA can be. Or do I need to face the fact that maybe, just maybe, it’s the sexy fairy shenanigans that hook me in Maas’s other series?
