Life is the thing you bring with you inside your own head

Normal People by Sally Rooney

July 8, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“He was like a freezer item that had thawed too quickly on the outside and was melting everywhere, while the inside was still frozen solid. Somehow he was expressing more emotion than at any time in his life before, while simultaneously feeling less, feeling nothing.” ― Sally Rooney, Normal People CBR15Bingo: Adulthood CBR15Passport: Books from different countries Connell and Marianne grow up together in the same small town in Ireland. Connell is the nerd and jock who hangs out with the wealthier, more popular kids. […]

YMMV but I get a lot of these novels

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

Rooney has basically figured out the Adam Sandler of book gigs. This is a reference to how Adam Sandler seems to always make these movies where it is imperative that his character be in a tropical paradise, with a cast that includes his friends, in a time of year that’s convenient in terms of weather etc. Over three books, one cannot help but notice how the main characters of her novels (disaffected, slightly over educated Irish literary/liberal arts types who could be described as “permanent […]

COVID and Traveling Gave Me Time to Read

Normal People by Sally Rooney

The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey

October 30, 2022 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I had started reading Normal People quite some time ago but put it down for long enough that when I was ready to start reading it again, I decided to just start over, and I think that helped my enjoy the book more. The re-read of part of the book helped me understand the characters in a way that I hadn’t the first time I started reading it. At this point, probably most people know the plot. Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron grew up in the […]

Love Languages

Normal People by Sally Rooney

July 13, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Like many, I bought into what Sally Rooney was selling here hook, line, and sinker. It’s not just because she tells quite a story in a beautiful way. It’s because, like few writers I’ve read, she engages in the subtleties and nuances of human emotion. It’s hard writing any book but without question, there’s a higher degree of difficulty in telling the “how” of it. Romantic novels are familiar in structure: two lovers, frequently star-crossed, try to find peace amidst the many challenges. But to […]

meant to read before watching, and now too lazy to watch more than some youtube clips

Normal People by Sally Rooney

Content warning: abuse, both emotional and physical (not in the main relationship, though, from family members) I wanted to watch the well-reviewed Hulu series based on this book, but wanted to read it before I did–even though a few people had told me that the series was better. I’m not one of those purists who thinks that the original written version is always better (come @ me but I think the Heartstopper TV adaptation is superior to the comic, and there are changes the TV […]

“we are standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something”

Beautiful World, Where Are You? by Sally Rooney

March 18, 2022 by tiny_bookbot Leave a Comment

I still have yet to read Normal People, Sally Rooney’s hit novel, or watch its adaptation. I do a lot with Irish literature, but somehow that hype train mostly bypassed me (and I’ll be honest, it’s probably due at least in part to the snobbishness of the rather arbitrary line between literary and mass market fiction–I love some mass market but the fact that this is work for me means I prioritize the literary stuff). Nonetheless, her follow-up, Beautiful World, Where Are You? was chosen by the book club […]
