Psst: There Is No Secret in This Contemporary Romance

April 29, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 2 Comments

I have reviewed the rest of the Beautiful series by writing duo Christina Lauren in an ongoing post, but since the tone of this latest entry was something different, I decided to review it by itself. To get caught up, this is the series thus far (8 books, 4 couples): Beautiful Bastard Beautiful Bitch Beautiful Stranger Beautiful Bombshell Beautiful Player Beautiful Beginning Beautiful Beloved Beautiful Secret  – Let’s begin shall we? Ruby is an engineering intern at a London firm. An American living abroad, she […]

Close but no cigar.

This book made me sad because I wanted to love it and I couldn’t so more than like it.  The characters were solid and the dialogue wasn’t bad but everything else was lacking.  I mean, I enjoyed the plot, but I can’t really give Lev AC Rosen credit for that, since All Men of Genius is a retelling of Twelfth Night.  A Victorian era, steampunk retelling of Twelfth Night with a dash of The Importance of Being Earnest* thrown in, to be exact. Violet and […]

In the novella Whisper of Jasmine, dashing explorer and archaeologist Gabriel Starke meets quiet dreamer Evangeline Merriweather at a New Year’s party thrown by their socialite friend Delilah Drummond. While Delilah most certainly intended to matchmake at the party, she had picked out completely different partners for both of them. Instead, Gabriel and Evie are instantly smitten with each other, and over the course of an evening, fall hard enough for each other that they decide to elope to Scotland. There are quite a few […]

Fu*k the What Now? A Paranormal Romance

April 15, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 20 Comments

Thanks to Katie and Patty’s inspiring review and JR Ward, I miss Kresley Cole. All three of you should go stand in the corner and THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID! Paranormal romance is the portion of the genre with the most primal stories. There are strong tribal elements and the tropes tend towards traditional roles. Men are warriors, god-like iron-thewed lords capable of both shocking violence and macho tenderness. The women are fertility goddesses, sensual and beautiful, but with a core of steel. The mythological […]

Naughty by Nature

April 13, 2015 by McM 4 Comments

Meh. I finished this book but will not be continuing with the series. I was pretty excited about a female protagonist, but my excitement was tempered pretty quickly. Tiny, bird-like, beautiful, damsel in distress needing protection from the big bad. I probably should have known better, but I am an optimist. Kiara Zamir is a famous dancer and the daughter of her planet’s president. She and her mother were kidnapped when Kiara was very young, tortured and made to witness the murder of her mother. […]

Meh.

This was okay. Not a bad way to spend an hour, but I think I wanted a different story than it ended up giving me. I just never connected with the characters after I realized it was going to be a different story than I thought it would be after reading the first three pages. Here’s how it starts. Violet is a wallflower at a ball on Christmas Eve, when in comes a seriously injured man fresh from being shipwrecked or something. He’s speaking some […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
