I wish I would have realized this series is not for me before I wasted all this time reading it.

April 20, 2016 by narfna Leave a Comment

I should have known better. I really should have. And I should have kept my big mouth shut about this book. Halfway through I decided to blab to Goodreads that I was actually really enjoying this book, way more than I had the first two, and that maybe juuuuuust maybe I would read a book in this series, and by these authors, that I really, truly enjoyed. The universe loves destroying dreams. Seriously, the first half was really fun in a way this series hadn’t […]

“When we tell truth, often we are callous; when we tell lies, often we are kind”

April 17, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

Spoiler warning! There will be some mild plot spoilers for the early sections of Jane Steele in this review. I’m going to try to keep things vague, but it’s difficult to write about without revealing some details. Even if those in today’s world who never read Jane Eyre (they exist, I’ve met several of them), still tend to know the gist of the story (it is after all, 200 years old by now). Poor, down-trodden and plain Jane has an awful childhood, goes to the […]

Not much of an inferno…more like a sad circle of hell

April 16, 2016 by Mikki Blu 6 Comments

So, I don’t really know where to begin with this book.  I gave it one star here, but I think that’s even too much. It’s so horribly bad that I was tempted for the first time ever to throw a book against the wall.   You may be wondering why I continued reading, and so did I but it really turned into a hate-read.  Seriously, it’s written like bad fanfic and it turns out that it was originally Twilight based fanfic!  (Not to say there isn’t […]

Imitation can be Fun, But it’s Rarely Art

April 16, 2016 by melanir 8 Comments

Jane Austin has a number of imitators but rarely do any of those imitators come close to capturing what truly makes her works stand the test of time. I’m sorry to say that Shades of Milk and Honey doesn’t capture that magic either. This isn’t to say that it’s a bad book, it’s an enjoyable read, but I don’t think it’s a great book either. Rather it’s an imitation of a masterpiece, fine to look at but nothing memorable. Kowal does attempt to imbue something […]

Dear Fake Character People: An Open Letter to (most of) the Characters in Pride and Prejudice

April 15, 2016 by narfna 19 Comments

ETA 4/21/16: I messed up when I marked two reviews in a row as #46, so this review actually isn’t my Cannonball. That honor belongs to my dubious review of Captive Prince. Shame on many fronts. The mistake has now been noted on both reviews. This is the third in my series of reviews wherein I get weird and write them in the form of letters to the characters. I’m re-reading all of Jane Austen’s books in 2016, and it shall be glorious. One every two months […]

A shaky start to a great series.

April 12, 2016 by narfna 4 Comments

ETA 4/21/16: Due to a boo-boo that I made (marking two reviews in a row as #46), this review is my actual Cannonball, even though I thought it was this one. Whoops! I have sooooooo many thoughts about this series. I don’t even know where to start! If you haven’t heard of it yet, this series is making the rounds as The Next Big Thing (I think, with good reason). It was originally published on LiveJournal user freece’s blog as an ongoing serial and gained a […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
