Holmes in a Skirt without much Sherlock

May 11, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

A Study in Silks can’t seem to decide if it wants to be a mystery, a steampunk adventure, a comedy of manners, a drama, or a romance. The main character is Evelina Cooper, daughter of a circus performer and a lady from country gentry. From her father’s family she inherits magical abilities and on her mother’s side she is niece to Sherlock Holmes. In her world, magic is illegal in England, and while Victoria rules in name, London is really controlled by a group of […]

Manufactured, paint by numbers chemistry.

May 10, 2016 by narfna 3 Comments

NB:  I received my copy of this book free in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway, but that has not affected the content of my review. NBII:  This review is six months late, and I did not like the book. NBIII:  I will probably never win another Goodreads giveaway. — I originally rated this three stars after finishing it because there was a cute dog in it and I allowed myself to be emotionally manipulated by its presence, but the further I get from it, the more […]

The Space Time Continuum Is Collapsing in a Delightful Romp

April 25, 2016 by lainiefig 4 Comments

It is inevitable that I start by comparing To Say Nothing of the Dog to Doomsday Book, the other Connie Willis novel I recently reviewed.  Though very much related in that involves the same delightful Oxford time travel team, this is a very different story, much more a light-hearted romp through Victorian England with references to mystery novels of that time (and later times).  In spite of how very different the tone of the book is, I loved it as well.  It’s like Doctor Who–some episodes are fun and […]

A Jennifer Crusie Cruise

April 21, 2016 by Lynn Leave a Comment

I went on a Jennifer Crusie binge a few weekends ago. I wanted it to be a Gilmore Girls binge, but instead, my kid wanted to have a Friends binge, and since I already know that Ross is going to pick Rachel over the bald girl who is married to Ben Stiller in real life, I needed something I could read even though the tv was on. Hence, Jennifer Cruise. Plus, she was a free download from the library. And it was cold out. So […]

I wish we still called them velocipedes.

I didn’t quite like this novella as much as everyone else seems to, but it definitely proves Courtney Milan hasn’t lost her touch with historical romance, after the disappointing first outing in this series. Her Every Wish is Daisy’s story. Daisy was Judith’s best friend from Once Upon a Marquess. She has dreams of opening her own business, and when the opportunity presents itself, she decides to enter into a contest to win money to open that dream business. The only problem is, she’s a […]

Hot hockey dudes and stuff.

April 21, 2016 by narfna 8 Comments

New adult is not my genre. I mostly prefer historicals when I read romance. But occasionally, a book catches my eye and gets such good reviews that the curiosity monster who lives in my head and makes all my decisions just can’t be denied. This was one of those books. I’ve also read m/m romances before, but they are by no means something I’ve read a lot of. This seems to be a very well done one. There’s no doubt it’s new adult, because holy […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
