Who Is This Romance Cover for Exactly?

September 2, 2017 by Mrs. Julien 4 Comments

Prostitution plots are the exception to my preference for marriage of convenience stories and Escorted features the first one I have read in  long time. There are some interesting ideas in this contemporary romance novel, but despite the rounds of contemplation about the oldest profession it inspired in me, Escorted wasn’t really anything special. Lori is a bestselling romance author in her mid-twenties who, despite her facility for writing about it, has never actually had sex. Eager to get her first time over with, she has gotten […]

Wasn’t this a Jennifer Lopez movie? Well, except for the murder…

August 23, 2017 by Bothari43 3 Comments

I know romance novels have a fierce fanbase here at CBR, but I have never really been part of it. However, my mom loaned me this because it’s about a wedding planner in Atlanta, and I live near there and have been navigating the fraught waters of wedding planning for what feels like eons now (nine more days, eeeeeeeep!). Hopefully there will be no murders and no bridezillas before then. Jaclyn Wilde is a stressed but successful wedding planner who runs her own event business […]

I liked it, but I kept wanting to get back to the main story.

August 22, 2017 by narfna 5 Comments

Well, I failed at my goal of finishing this series before the movie came out on August 15th*. Perhaps Ashley of past years could have finished the remaining three books in the next thirteen days (as of actually finishing the book), but Present Ashley is certainly not capable of it. *Will not now be seeing movie. Very upset at genius casting of Idris Elba entirely wasted. I was still going to give it a chance until I read they’d made Jake the protagonist and dumbed […]

The Romance/Murder Mystery/Thriller/Ghost Story You’ve Been Looking For!

August 8, 2017 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

The Ghost Bride is a great summer read which I thoroughly enjoyed and raced through in no time. I picked it up based on a list of recommended fantasy reads that are one-off’s and not part of a multi-volume series. This novel was so good, I now wish it was part of a series (and it seems to me, based on the ending, that it could become one). I came for the fantasy/ghost aspect and its historical overtones, but the romance part of it was […]

Cannonballing with Julia Quinn.

August 1, 2017 by narfna 19 Comments

I tried real hard for my Cannonball to be with, like, a super cool book that I lost my mind over, but I guess I’ll just have to settle for an ordinary one that I just plain old enjoyed. It did make me swoon a little, so that’s something at least. Maybe it’s just because I’m a sucker for a good love story with pining, but I really liked this Bridgerton book, maybe more than most people seem to have done. This is Francesca’s book, […]

I didn’t like this as much as everyone else has :\

August 1, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this book! I did. But I wanted to love it, and I didn’t. Ugh, and all the pieces for me loving it were in place! Tensions over class, racial and gender divides. A romance involving characters who logistically will find it difficult to be together (white man/black woman). A badass heroine who does really cool things all while still experiencing the full range of human emotion. The idea that the heroine was black was also appealing, because my favorite genre of romance (historicals) […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
