The Escape by K.A. Applegate

The Warning by K.A. Applegate

The Underground by K.A. Applegate

I skipped book 14 of the Animorphs because I heard it’s skippable and I need the grace period! I’m so behind! In The Escape (a Marco book), the kids learn that the Yeerks are attempting to infiltrate the Leerans, an aquatic psychic alien species. They hope to control Leerans to suss out enemies with said psychic powers. To aid this quest, they are creating a species of enhanced hammerhead sharks to act as their underwater muscle. This is the highest priority job for the Yeerks, […]

Slaves of the Switchboard of Doom: A Novel of Retropolis by Bradley W. Schneck

December 26, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Slaves of the Switchboard of Doom: A Novel of Retropolis feels somewhat familiar, even though I’ve never read one of these novels; I’m pretty sure given the series/setting name (Retropolis), that’s intentional. If you think about one of those 1940s-ish era sci-fi or “world of the future” images or stories, you’ve basically got this novel, both in terms of written content and visuals (there are occasional full and partial page illustrations. Everything looks and sounds (word and image again) vaguely cartoony, kind of familiar, and […]

Kristy's Great Idea (Baby-Sitters Club #1) by Ann M. Martin

April 21, 2020 by cheerbrarian 5 Comments

In this, the time of corona, some people are killing time by embarking on new hobbies. I’m a proud member of the sourdough nation, i.e., those weirdoughs (bread pun!) making homemade starter and bread. I’ve gotten back into adult coloring and, relevant to this review, I’ve taken up reading the first novels of the Babysitters-club books on Facebook live. You miiiiight wonder how exactly I got to here. My favorite podcast, Literary Disco, is doing their part to raise spirits by cranking out more episodes […]

Kickin it on Deathworld

March 14, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Last year on Pajiba and/or CBR, I asked for fun sci-fi recommendations. Harry Harrison’s Bill, the Galactic Hero series was recommended by more than a couple folks. A quick “Harry Harrison” search on my Kindle revealed this book, instead of Bill. This book was free, so I downloaded it and soaked it up. Deathworld, despite the name, is a fun and thoughtful work of science fiction from the man who brought us Soylent Green. It combines the things that I love most about sci-fi: entertainment, […]

Interesting with Scholomance, I very much read it as the adult book for former YA magic school book readers
