High School Drama + Magic + Alabama + Hipsters

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins

January 14, 2019 by Halbs 2 Comments

In my inaugural post of the year, I mentioned that part of my 2019 reading goal was to read more books by international and female writers in order to expand my horizons a bit. I’m also trying to jump out of my typical genres, to see what’s out there. Rachel Hawkins’ Rebel Belle was a fun diversion from what I normally read. It’s the perfect kind of book to listen to whilst road tripping – light, fun, and entertaining. Amy Rubinate’s narration style was a welcome passenger […]

Beware the dark witch clique

December 29, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. I needed a palate cleanser after going from unbearably grim with Out to sickly sweet with Romancing the Duke. I was in the market for something less polarizing and more neutral in tone. That palate cleanser was Hex Hall and it did the trick. YA fiction to the rescue! Supernatural high school drama isn’t all that different from regular teen drama

December 9, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

Sophie Mercer is a witch and because of the various bad incidents her magic has gotten her mixed up in, she and her mum have moved a lot during her lifetime. After Sophie seriously misjudges the oomph of a love spell at her current high school’s prom, and there is a huge scene, Sophie’s normally absentee father, a European warlock of some kind, gets involved. Sophie is sent off to a boarding school. On a remote island, where she will stay until she graduates at […]

I’m pretty sure I’m too old for this crap.

My YA-themed book club has been picking mostly winners lately. But every now and then, we hit a bump in the road and the book turns out to be one that we generally don’t care for (Plain Kate, Anna Dressed in Blood). I’m going to go ahead and put this in the “miss” pile, but not because it was bad, but more because it just wasn’t my thing. From what I understand, Rachel Hawkins is a terribly popular writer of various YA series (Hex Hall?), mostly […]
