Not That I Could Tell: Nosy and Nefarious Neighbors

Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser

June 27, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

A woman is missing. Not just a woman, but a woman and her twins. Out of a beautiful, safe neighborhood in Yellow Springs, Ohio – home to Dave Chappelle.  She went missing after having a girls’ night with some of the neighborhood ladies, and no one seems to know where she is. But everyone is interested in finding out: from the intrepid young reporter, publishing an independent neighborhood paper to the only single woman in the neighborhood with a fraught familial relationship to the stay-at-home […]

The Blood of the Lamb

Once You Go This Far by Kristen Lepionka

July 20, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of cbr12bingo: Gateway. I frequently recommend Kristen Lepionka’s work to budding mystery fans, especially ones looking for an LGBTQIA+ author and/or protagonist. I don’t know how long Kristen Lepionka plans to continue with this series. I believe her next book is going to be a standalone separate from Roxane’s character (and perhaps universe?). I think she’s of the modern age sort of writer that unless you really catch bestselling fire with a series (a la Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch), there comes a […]

Oh-hi-oh

What You Want To See by Kristen Lepionka

March 13, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

Kristen Lepionka’s Roxanne Weary series is one of my favorites to come along in recent years. This could be me dating myself as a end-of-the-spectrum millennial but Roxanne feels like someone I would know. And Kristen Lepionka gets her voice and atmosphere down well. This one is in some ways an improvement on book one, though I liked that one too. I don’t know why, especially because there wasn’t a Macguffin, but I got a real Maltese Falcon vibe from this story. It could have been […]

Cleveland’s Steel Mill is a Great Place To Figure Your S*** Out

Rust by Eliese Colette Goldbach

January 21, 2020 by Rachel 2 Comments

Rust is a memoir of an ordinary person, but a person who has faced incredible personal challenges. It is the true story of the author, who was struggling in her post-graduate life to find her path in the world. Eliese finds herself back in her hometown of Cleveland, a place she never thought she would end up in as an adult. She rode out the Great Recession by enrolling in graduate school only to graduate and be faced with a pile of student loan debt. […]

Requiem for the Aughts

Cherry by Nico Walker

March 13, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

I have a feeling this is one of those books that will fall strictly in the love/hate divide. With major caveats, I’m in the former. I’m the same age as the lead character. Born in the 80s, bored in the 90s, bombed in the 00s. 9/11. The recession. And though I’ve never done drugs or served in the military, I could relate to this story. Because this is the story of too many people I know. People whose lives were used and abused overseas. People […]

I went to the library and checked out a book because I was getting scared.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

December 16, 2016 by borisanne 2 Comments

I just reviewed Becky Albertalli’s “Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda” and I’m not going to lie, I was reading “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” at the same time, and sometimes I had trouble telling the difference between them. And I mean that with every compliment, because, as I wrote in my “Simon” review, there’s a strong and important tradition of novels that normalize the alienation of adolescence, and the millions of forms that it can take. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is […]
