The book, "The Golden Enclaves" by Naomi Novik standing next to a book bingo card mostly filled out.

“Personally I felt I’d had far too many feelings lately and would have liked to repress a lot of them”. Bingo #5!

The Golden Enclaves: Lesson Three of the Scholomance by Naomi Novik

CBR14 Bingo: “New” – The Golden Enclaves is the new book in the Scholomance trilogy. This is a spoiler free review.  What started in A Deadly Education, and continued in The Last Graduate, is now concluded in The Golden Enclaves.  This series immediately grabbed me from the get go.  Cantankerous El quickly found a place in my heart, along with her companions.  Their harrowing adventures had me constantly engaged.  I found the world setting and magic system fascinating.  Novik kept me continuously curious about the workings […]

more mad about other reviews than about anything in this lovely end to a trilogy

The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik

November 3, 2022 by wicherwill 4 Comments

I started reading other reviews of this book and got so incensed that I am breaking my rather strict “write reviews in order” rule to respond to some of the criticism. Which is…woooooow are people mad about 17 and 18 year olds not swearing eternal faithfulness to their high school boyfriends. I feel like Novik has hit a really sore nerve for some people who read YA fantasy (or, say, Harry Potter) and believe that it’s normal for teenagers (TEENAGERS) to always end up with […]

Stuff happens without much action and I am confused

The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik

October 26, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

BNGO review 23: Holiday Graduation is an event to celebrate. A holiday is the commemoration of a celebratory event that often includes celebrations. Thus, The Last Graduate and The Golden Enclaves qualify as holiday-themed stories. Confession: I haven’t totally finished The Last Graduate, but I had a chance to get The Golden Enclaves from the library; what my library does with new releases is they are available for shorter check out periods with no renewal option, and that deadline was approaching. Technically this is a […]

one of my favorite books of all time (favorite?), finally re-read

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

October 4, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Re-read August 2022: why yes, despite the fact that I frequently call this one of my favorite books, I haven’t re-read it ever. Don’t get me wrong–I think I’ve read parts of it over and over (Miryem and the vaults of silver, in particular) but never the full book end to end. Let’s call a spade a spade: I was scared! What if it didn’t hold up to my prior review? Written in December 2018, in my defense, almost a year (!) before JKR came out […]

Two people with a hero complex off to save the school

The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik

February 19, 2022 by Dinah Lord Leave a Comment

This is the second book in the Scholomance trilogy: the first, A Deadly Education, told El’s story in the last three weeks of her junior year at the school of magic, the Scholomance, and how her efforts and those of her friends have, she hopes, helped most of the seniors graduate without significant casualties. This second book covers El’s senior year, starting off with what El considers the worst possible assignment: her study hall as the sole senior in a classroom of young, inexperienced freshmen. […]

Help! This school is trying to kill me

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

February 7, 2022 by Dinah Lord 1 Comment

El (short for Galadriel) is a trying-to-be-good wizard whose powers seem much more designed to go very big and very bad: there’s even a prophecy about her. She’s a pupil at the Scholomance, in her junior year, desperately trying to stay alive through the unusual challenges being a wizard entails, and gain sufficient alliances with her fellow pupils that she’ll (a) be able to graduate (which means getting out alive from the Scholomance), and (b) get a place in a magical enclave, and not have […]
