The New Era of Speculative Fiction

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

January 6, 2020 by Ale 2 Comments

I’ve sworn off reading trilogies/series for the past few years since I tend to either get totally obsessed or very bored. But after reading Jemisin’s short fiction collection last year, I knew I needed to read her novels. The Fifth Season did not disappoint, and I can’t wait to read the rest of The Broken Earth trilogy. The Fifth Season revolves around a world built on active volcanoes, which means there are often ‘seasons’ of cataclysmic disasters. These ‘seasons’ are documented and passed down to the surviving […]

The Fifth Season: The Earth Really is Trying to Shake Us Off

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

January 6, 2020 by reginadelmar 1 Comment

Season after season the Earth is hit with cataclysmic events: volcanic eruptions, massive earthquakes, a mining accident. These events cause shifts in the continent(s) and climate events that alter the earth’s ecology again and again. These events and their aftermath are called Seasons. The Fifth Season is a generic term for an extended winter of more than six months caused by a large scale environmental alteration. There are no vehicles, no internet, no fossil fuels. This is the backdrop for the stories of three women: […]

Okay I love short stories now

How Long Till Black Future Month by N.K. Jemisin

November 20, 2019 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

It really has taken me this long to get short stories so god bless my library because I never would have gotten here without it. I’d been anti-short story because I missed the novel-length follow through on plots or people or places, but I’m now pro-short story because I can pick up a book at any time, read a chapter, and then put it away for however long I want. Not that I’d want to do that with this book because Jemisin is like GRRM for me […]

The Skin You Are In…

Emergency Skin by N. K. Jemisin

September 30, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Definitely going to read the other stories in this collection. This was a wonderful way to pass the day in bed on Sunday. Also this weekend in the U.S. we should be seeing a  cool down. There is even snow happening in some parts. And as for me I am going leaf peeping. So this book was the perfect thing to read especially with the discussion of climate change going on. So “Emergency Skin” follows an unseen narrator talking to someone who is going […]

Fresh Fantasy

How Long Til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin

April 18, 2019 by Ale Leave a Comment

It took me a long time to get through this book, but not because I didn’t like it. I really loved many of the stories in this collection. Jemisin’s prose is tight, and fresh, and wonderful. She creates full-bodied characters in small spaces, and in many ways, the largest reason it took me almost a whole month to read was because I’d be so bereft at having to leave a  character or environment that I love, and I simply wasn’t ready to move on to […]

How long ’til black future month?

How Long 'Til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin

February 25, 2019 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

I picked this book up purely on the strength of my love for N.K. Jemisin.  I’m generally not a fan of the short story format.  The only short story collections I’ve read cover to cover are the ones written by Neil Gaiman, who is very high on my favorite author list.  N.K. Jemisin is an incredible author who creates fantastic worlds so I anticipated enjoying the book, but I was blown away at how her short fiction thoroughly engaged me in a way that the […]
