“Heartbreak is a loss. Divorce is a piece of paper.”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

October 10, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, Taylor Jenkins Reid published Daisy Jones and the Six, which has generally been very well received critically and keeps popping up on “Must read” lists. In several review of that book, I saw this, Jenkins Reid’s previous release, from 2017, highly recommended. Several people who were so-so on Daisy Jones and the Six claimed to prefer The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and as movie stars seemed more intriguing to me than rock stars, I decided to give it a try. There are multiple narratives in […]

The Star On the Train

Dread Journey by Dorothy Hughes

July 25, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

I enjoyed Gone Girl well enough but those hailing Gone Girl and the female-written female-driven thriller novel that has become en vogue should do a little cultural excavation. Women have historically dominated the thriller market, especially in the 30s through the 50s. And one of the greats, indeed perhaps the greatest of these was Dorothy Hughes. I haven’t read a lot of Hughes and that’s my mistake. Her most popular work is In A Lonely Place, which inspired the Humphrey Bogart movie that’s drastically different from the book. But she’s […]

Kirkus thought this book was better than The Hating Game. Kirkus is very wrong

December 27, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars Glory Hallelujah (yup, that’s actually her name) Greenleaf is the only one in her family who’s never broken the law or deviated from the straight and narrow. Unlike most of her other family members, who only seem to leave Hellcat Canyon to go to prison or when they die, Glory was going to become a star, using her songwriting and singing talent to make it big. Of course, then her brother Jonah was arrested for meth dealing and she had to use all […]

Not as entertaining as her historical novels

June 19, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars Actor John Tennessee McCord was the star of a long-running TV show, but recently, his career has taken a bit of a dive. Having been one half of a big Hollywood power couple and then being rather publically dumped last year certainly hasn’t helped. Now he’s got a new TV series lined up about the California gold rush and while scouting out the locations for it, his pickup truck breaks down in Hellcat Canyon. Not that he minds all that much, as the […]

I'm excited for this one. And according to your scale, it will be my favorite since I liked Camp Damascus...
