I never know what I will find when I browse catalogs (in hand or online). Recently I found (on Edelweiss) Zara’s Big Messy Books. These books are currently available, but I had them as reader copies, so there are a few “missing” pieces, such as I am not sure of the size of them, and I think that might affect some of the readers willingness to read. I was unfamiliar with the author, so it is the perfect author for CBR15Passport. Rebekah Borucki has […]

The crime, the punishment, the Americanized reporter

Honor by Thirty Umrigar

November 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The world of India is opened in a way few know within the pages of Honor by Thirty Umrigar. The Beauty and The Beast of this country with its different cultures, traditions, physical light and ugly are out in the open. When a Hindu woman and her Muslim husband, are attacked by her brothers, killing her husband, an American reporter takes on her story. Not just because another woman was involved in an Honor Killing, but because she is willing to stand up to her […]

His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie

May 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I finally finished His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie. I say finally as it was a slow read for me. There is a lot going on and yet, it is a straightforward novel. I will start off with it is a “sophisticated romance” vs a “light-hearted romance.”  The biggest difference between the two is in a light-hearted romance you tend to know there will be a happily ever after, and a sophisticated romance might not have a happily ever after for our lovers. Neither […]

All For One and One for All…and a Baton Twirl to seal the deal

Raymie Nightingale by Kate DiCamillo

May 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read Kate DiCamillo’s Three Rancheros series out of order. I read Louisiana’s Way Home a few years back and just finished Raymie Nightingale yesterday afternoon. You can read them out of sequence, but it helps a little to know what happened in Raymie’s world first. Because of this order of reading, I think Louisiana’s story was stronger. Maybe it was because I was introduced to her first, or maybe because I have heard Raymie’s story before: the father leaves his family for another woman. […]
