Shenanigans for Grown-Ups

The Break by Marian Keyes

April 24, 2026 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Every bubble in the galaxy has burst. The million shards of sparkle suspended in the air have turned to wet ash. All the colour has leached away and the world is just grey, grey, grey.  Amy O’Connell is a 44 year old mother of three daughters, married to Hugh. She loves him, but life is a dull and chaotic blur and while she realises that Hugh is struggling after the death of his father, she is blindsided when he tells her he wants to take […]

Finally a way to get rid of the so-called Spice Coke

Saved By Cake: Over 80 Ways to Bake Yourself Happy by Marian Keyes

February 9, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I don’t think I’ve ever read a cookbook written by a novelist; I’ve read novels that have recipes in them, but that’s a different thing. I’ve only read 1 novel by Marian Keyes; I was visiting my mom who lived in Ireland at the time, I was bored, and I pulled a book off one of here shelves. It was Last Chance Saloon by Marian Keyes, and I remember it being basically a group of friends navigating modern life with a strong dose of romance. […]

“something beautiful left town, and she never even knew its name”

Again, Rachel (2022) by Marian Keyes

June 3, 2023 by drmllz Leave a Comment

I haven’t been very well in the last couple of months–various new aches and pains and discomforts and a couple of random fevers; tests and scans come back OK for now; lots of “could be stress, could be anything” and late night browsing what “anything” might be (which is a bad thing to do, don’t do this). So I sought something chill to read (I’m about of a 10th of the way through Emily M. Danforth’s Plain Bad Heroines (2020) which is brilliant and tangled […]

Messy Family Dynamics

Grown Ups by Marian Keyes

May 10, 2021 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Fans of Liane Moriarty’s writing. In a nutshell: CN for book and review: Disordered Eating The Casey family – three brothers and their wives and kids – are at a dinner party when it seems as though a few secrets are about to be spilled. We immediately go back six months in time to see what has led to this. Worth quoting: “As a skinny, knock-kneed eight-year-old, she knew that too much bread and butter would make her fat – and far was […]

Long But Good

The Break by Marian Keyes

April 4, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Those looking for an interesting read that’s a bit longer than one might expect from fiction targeted at women. In a nutshell: Amy’s husband Hugh wants a six-month break. Worth quoting: I studied her avidly, keen to know how other people managed the tricky, tricky business of being a woman. Why I chose it: Airport purchase. Remember airports? Review: I bought this book back when known cases of COVID-19 were mostly limited to Asia. I flew from the UK to the US to […]

What is Addiction?

Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes

June 7, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I definitely liked “Rachel’s Holiday” a lot more than “Watermelon.” Maybe because this one more expressly shows the flaws in the Walsh family matriarch and father. Also, I still disliked Helen in this one too. Anna seems mostly harmless and cares. We also get to see/hear more about Maggie(one of the 5 sisters). I felt sorry for Rachel who is in the midst of addiction and doesn’t even want to admit what has been going on with her. And unlike with Claire in the last […]
