The most surreal collection I have ever read

Gods of Want: Stories by K-Ming Chang

December 28, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

I picked up this book for a couple of reasons. One, I really enjoy short story collections. Two, I read a short blurb about this book about that described it as spanning the space between magical realism and fantasy which totally piqued my interest. It was available as an audiobook from my local library, so I checked it out. Typically when I read a collection of short stories, I like to review the collection as a whole as well as give a brief review of […]

“She didn’t want this, she thought. She wanted to stop being afraid.. and she wanted a future that didn’t look exactly like her past. There had to be something they could do. This wasn’t living, it was just giving up while still breathing.” ― Maggie Stiefvater, Call Down the Hawk “Farooq-Lane’s fist smarted as if it had just been smashed against a douchebag’s face, because it had just been smashed against a douchebag’s face.” ― Maggie Stiefvater, Call Down the Hawk Spoilers for The Raven […]

I prayed this was not the doctor. “I’m the doctor!” he said, waving to the children.

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson

December 11, 2022 by carmelpie 4 Comments

I thought it over. Dollywood. “Islands in the Stream.” That body. She was the best thing that had ever come out of Tennessee. Jesus Christ, it wasn’t even close. ― Kevin Wilson, Nothing to See Here I’ll admit it. I chose this book because of its cover. The combination of the title plus a cartoon wrapped in flames immediately made me curious to see if the author shares the same dark sense of humor as I do. It turns out, they do. Nothing to see […]

This House is Not a Home

The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

December 8, 2022 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

Mexican Gothic meets Crimson Peak is the way I would describe this novel, although some reviews have compared it to Rebecca, a book I have not read. Set during the years following the Mexican War of Independence, the story follows Beatriz, a young woman who has recently married into the wealthy Solórzano family after a whirlwind courtship from the heir patron of San Isidro, Rodolfo. Although she barely knows him, Beatriz agreed to marry him as a way to raise her status as a mixed […]

Don’t say, “Bite me” to this family

What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo

October 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo is not for everyone. It has an odd theme, with odder imagery (though no illustrations). Yet, while it is interesting nonetheless, it does have several weaknesses. Some plot point holes are one of them, and another (for me) was that the characters are not overly likable. One would assume that werewolves would not be likable, but you would hope that as a family unit you could empathize with them. But I have little empathy for a family that sends a […]

Other Birds

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

September 9, 2022 by Classic 5 Comments

Such a shame. I have been waiting on a new Sarah Addison Allen book for years. I absolutely love her older books and this one just didn’t do it for me. Somehow in her other books she’s always been able to transport me to a fictional town where it seemed magic leaked around the edges. Instead this book seems to be missing that. Maybe because the grief in these pages just crowded out everything else. And I think that due to that I wasn’t able […]
