When your vice becomes a virtue

A Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee

June 7, 2021 by murderofcrows Leave a Comment

Mackenzie Lee’s novel is a fun romp across 18th Europe with a bitchy bisexual mc, his brilliant ace sister, an unrequited love for his gay best friend and a host of murderous aristocrats in pursuit. The plot moves fairly quickly with snappy dialogue supplied by Lord Henry “Monty” Montague, a seemingly unrepentant spoiled brat rogue on his Grand Tour. Monty is a great character, who manages to never be completely obnoxious in his clueless privileged bumblings. He retains enough awareness to make him truly charming- […]

No connection between these, I’m just behind

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzie Lee

Holy moses I got so behind, and I still have one more I need to review but with the amount I’ve been talking about it offline, it definitely deserves its own review from me. So let’s get started. The Bride Test, by Helen Hoang I read and reviewed the first book in this series, The Kiss Quotient, and wasn’t so prude I wouldn’t read the second, so here we are. I like that the two books are connected without this one feeling like a sequel (a […]

Unfortunately an ultimately forgettable romp

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee

This book was soft and delightful. It felt like a hug. Not a fix-all-the-world’s-wrongs warm hug like a Rainbow Rowell, but I’ve never been too picky about my hugs. It’s hard to have a well-intentioned bad hug, and this book really has the best of intentions. It’s sweet – it’s just also kind of forgettable. Our protagonist (I’d argue he doesn’t really do enough to be considered an active hero) is Monty, a rascal of a lord’s son who is fated to inherit his father’s […]

Needs more vice and virtue

February 18, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. I kept hearing about this fun new book featuring queer kids living in historical England from several of my bookish friends. I’m not sure if I was in a weird mood or what, but my experience of this book was not exactly what I would call “fun.” I definitely enjoyed it, it’s just that if you tell a story about queer people in a historical setting, it’s definitely not just fun and games. That fact made this a bit of an anxious read […]
