And a shout out to Mom for moving the dead squirrel

Something New: Tales from a Makeshift Bride by Lucy Knisley

June 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was never “that girl.” You know, the one that planned her wedding before she could walk. In fact, I never really wanted to get married. Most people think that is because my parents were divorced; but it is just the opposite. My parents were happily married for over 30 years when my mom passed almost 7 years ago.  Therefore, Lucy Knisley and I had something in common there. But when Lucy did decide to marry, in the middle of planning it all, she also […]

When you take a couple city folks and try and put them in the country

Stepping Stones by Lucy Knisley

February 19, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The understatement of the year is: I am on a graphic novel kick. I realized over the past almost two years I have collected several reader copies and my library has one heck of a middle and young adult reader graphic novel section. And I have found three publishers that publisher good books that “just happen” to be graphic novels: First Second, Graphix and Random House. Random House last year put out four books in the graphic novel format presented as an unofficial series. These […]

Meet Pals’ (the palindrome baby that had a few bumps in his life even before it was his life) Mom

Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos by Lucy Knisley

August 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #Listicle Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos by Lucy Knisley was not what I expected. Instead of getting a strong female voice, telling her story about miscarriages, pregnancy and the after-pregnancy issues, I expected something a bit more “introspective” and “flowery.” I expected a long explanation of how the author went through a spiritual journey to deal with her traumatic loss. What Knisley gives us is a funny, realistic, informative graphic novel. Knisley does not hold back. She talks about her childhood obsession with pregnancy, […]

A graphic memoir about pregnancy, but worth reading even if you don’t want to ever be pregnant.

Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos by Lucy Knisley

April 10, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I always feel the same way when I finish a new Lucy Knisley book. It’s so weird to have followed her since the very beginning of her career (through a stroke of luck, I’ve followed her blog from the beginning, before she published a book, because a friend also followed her), to essentially watch her life progress without having spoken a single word to her. (This is especially true since I started following her on Instagram after her son was born. She’s been posting lots […]

An Age for Everything

January 9, 2018 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

After not completing last year’s Book Riot Read Harder Challenge I am back at it again for 2018 with a new set of challenges. My first stop was seeing if any of the books I did not manage in 2017 would suit a 2018 challenge, and low and behold the book I had picked out for last year’s task 8: Read a Travel Memoir would suit this year’s task 4: Read a Comic Written and Drawn by the Same Person. A couple of years ago […]

Lucy’s Wedding

February 11, 2017 by bonnie 2 Comments

I’ve heard of Lucy Knisley before on CBR and Goodreads. I greatly enjoyed Relish, even if the graphic novel layout didn’t always meet my expectations. And then I read Something New and immersed myself in the incredible storytelling and art. It’s a delightful and insightful memoir that merges art and philosophy proficiently. Knisley talks about the journey of her wedding, from her relationship to her husband and the winding path of love, to her engagement and subsequent struggle to identify as a “bride.” She unpacks […]
