Fun paranormal mysteries

September 30, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

I started this review after reading Midnight Riot, promptly never finished writing my review, and then read Moon Over Soho.  So now I get to write two reviews for the price of one!  Laziness pays off again!  I am really enjoying this series.  They are paranormal mysteries with a large dash of police procedural thrown in.  I could have sworn that I heard about Midnight Riot here (since this is basically my only non-romance recommendation source these days), but I can’t seem to locate it […]

Born This Way

So, I really, really loved The Rook. I loved Myfanwy Thomas and I loved the Checquy. I had pretty high hopes for this sequel, and overall, it was pretty good. The overarching focus of Stiletto is the peace accords between the Checquy and the Grafters, who were the big bads in the first book. The narrative moves between Felicity Clements, a Pawn with the ability to read the past through inanimate objects, and Odette Leliefeld, who’s part of the Grafter delegation visiting London. Myfanwy shows up throughout […]

I Trusted You, Faber….I Trusted You….

September 6, 2016 by Ale 3 Comments

This book was totally getting 5 stars because it’s beyond good. It’s one of those books that makes you smell the horse droppings on the dirty London street and see the smog building in the chilly morning air as Oliver Twist wanders by with his grubby little face begging for more gruel.  But then Faber decided he was tired of writing and the conclusion of this book literally gets into a hackney carriage and clip clops away into oblivion. And then I was angry. But […]

Ghosts of War

March 21, 2016 by sarah_jwh 3 Comments

This review is for the audiobook version of The Other Side Of Midnight, by Simone St James. This might just be St. James’s best work so far! In 1920s London, psychic Ellie Winter, daughter of the famed Fantastique, is asked to help a mysterious government agent find his sister’s ghost. Gloria Sutter used to be Ellie’s best friend, until her scheming brought ruin to the Fantastique. The New Society was trying to bring legitimacy to psychic phenomenon, but their testing proved Ellie’s mother a fraud, […]

This review is for the audiobook version of Bristol House, by Beverly Swerling. This book is practically Sarah bait. History, adventure, ghosts, and a little romance, what more could I want? The story follows Annie Kendall, Tudor historian specializing in religious symbols on doors, as she begins a new research project in London. Annie is a recovering alcoholic trying to rebuild her academic career and has been given a fantastic opportunity to research Jews in the Tudor era, and is set up in an […]

I love stories told from multiple perspectives… These all happen to be girls!

I got this book from the library, and I had to wait for like 15 people to read it and bring it back before I could get it.  I totally understand now.  I COULD NOT put this book down!  I read it at lunch time while I was at work.  Like to the point where I probably could’ve gotten fired because I couldn’t stop reading and get back to work. Rachel rides the train everyday to work.  Well, kinda to work (just read the book […]
