Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin

March 30, 2026 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

And I realized that such childishness was fantastic at my age and the happiness out of which it sprang yet more so; for that moment I really loved Giovanni, who had never seemed more beautiful than he was that afternoon. And, watching his face, I realized that it meant much to me that I could make his face so bright. I saw that I might be willing to give a great deal not to lose that power. And I felt myself flow toward him, as […]

“Now all I can see is the longing. Not only for companionship, but for community. He’s looking for people like him. It’s very touching, and very familiar, isn’t it?”

After Hours at Dooryard Books by Cat Sebastian

January 2, 2026 by narfna 2 Comments

Nothing like starting off the new year with a five star read. I will admit I was hoping for this outcome when I picked it for my first book of the year. Cat Sebastian is increasingly becoming known for atmospheric, historically rich, community-focused, and quietly revolutionary little books. I wanted a lovely time full of lovely people that would take me away to a time in history that reflects pieces of our own Current Times while still being an escape hatch from reality. You don’t […]

I’m So Glad I’m Not an Adolescent Anymore

Flamer by Mike Curato

November 13, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I loved that this graphic novel made me feel. There were so many times I would think “Aw, poor guy” and have a lot of sympathy or empathy for main character Aiden, and other times he made me laugh. The book is funny sometimes, especially if you, like me, can sometimes have a juvenile sense of humor. These varying emotional beats could easily occur within a page or two of each other. While the book is about Aiden Navarro, author Mike Curato drew on his […]
