Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert

CBR 14 Bingo: Rec’d Katee Robert is probably not an author I would have gotten into without all the hearty recommendations of her that I have read! Helen Kasios wants to be more than a pawn, and competing in the trials to become Ares seems to be her way out. But her family has other plans for her, and her brother offers her hand in marriage to whoever wins. Of course, I love Katee Robert’s books, and I really enjoy her more plot-heavy Olympus books. […]

I might be softly done with this series, but ymmv

I might be rounding up for this book–I picked this up because I really loved Neon Gods, but these next two entries just haven’t really kept my attention as much. This time around, the old Ares (head of Olympus’ armed forces) has passed away. The spot of Ares is filled with the victor of a series of physical trials–sort of a American Ninja/Triwizard maze/Gladiator set. Helen (of Troy), in this series one of the sisters of the current Zeus (nee Perseus) and a member of one […]

I was asked why I wanted to read Katee Robert’s Wicked Beauty and I said it was because I wanted to see a Helen who wasn’t a pawn, and definitely a Helen who got better partners than Paris and Menelaus. Wicked Beauty delivers that with a Helen who is determined to dictate her own future, and finds herself in a competitors to lovers relationship with Achilles and Patroclus. Katee Robert’s Dark Olympus series is less a retelling of Greek mythology and more in the style […]

Contemporary Eros and Psyche – the hitman and the influencer

Electric Idol by Katee Robert

Psyche Demetriou wishes her mother would stop trying to push her at the most powerful men in Olympus to arrange a solid business alliance. She’s used to pretending to be shallow and vain, as well as deaf to all the voices who try to tear her down for her social position or body shape. She misses the quiet life before her mother became hugely powerful and sees the good in everyone, to the point where she spends time patching up dangerous hitman Eros at a […]

Katee Robert was a name unknown to me until I read nart’s review of Neon Gods, and her review (and those of other Cannonballers) made me intrigued by the premise – modern-day retellings of Greek myths where the gods of Olympus are actually mortal rulers of the city of Olympus, in an unknown country only loosely connected to our real world. It’s an interesting setting, and allows Robert to make up her own rules about how things work and why. As other reviewers have pointed […]

“Her bouts of bitchiness were really starting to grow on him, which just proved how in over his head he was.”

There is just something magical about taking well known stories with timid, two dimensional women that are little more than plot devices and retelling them with a recast woman that has her own motivations and personality. Even when they’re not perfect, they’re still good. Plot: Persephone has been playing the biddable daughter to bide her time so she can escape Olympus and its political machinations forever when her mother all but sells her to Zeus to be his new Hera. The problem is that the […]
