A Romance Because Mrs. Julien and Malin are Kind Beyond Measure (no, that’s not the plot)

April 9, 2015 by Emmalita 7 Comments

I started reading romances in college, many many years ago. It was kind of lonely because no one really talked about them. There was the danger of being judged, and I still cared about such things. I read romances all through law school and all through my decade in a traditional office based career, and through my years in non-traditional, non-career working and then about 6 years ago, I mostly stopped. I would occasionally read an Eloisa James or Julia Quinn, but the Jayne Anne […]

No Alex and Still Not Olivia’s Book, But a Pleasant Historical Romance

April 7, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 7 Comments

Having just finished a book in which the main characters were rarely in the same country, it was a pleasant change to read a book in which the hero and heroine are almost always in the same room, and by one of my favourite authors as well. Julie Anne Long’s new, potentially penultimate, Pennyroyal Green novel, It Started with a Scandal, includes small visits from previous stories’ characters and the return of one of her most charming men, the displaced French aristocrat and raffish rogue […]

Disclaimer: I’m super behind on writing up the books I’ve read. What can I say? Good things happening in my life have unfortunately meant I’ve had less time to read and write about said reading. I’m super behind on my TiVo too, if it makes you feel any better.  This is all to say that the following summary is going to be brief and probably leave out a lot since it’s been quite some time since I read the book in question. The Perils of […]

“Does it matter? Your age?” “It does indeed. A bit.”

September 16, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 10 Comments

Poor Genevieve Eversea. She’s in love with a simple prat, or so she thinks, because she’s “loved” him since childhood and that naive imagining of love is all she knows. Luckily for her, her brother Ian is also a prat, and a particular indiscretion of his leaves one Duke, Alex Moncrieffe, without a betrothed and with the Eversea family on his radar. Having a vengeful Duke set his sights upon you or your family could so easily be the set-up of a thriller or tale […]

Another Historical Romance Trilogy, But from a Back Catalogue

September 4, 2014 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

First, thank you, Malin, for the loan of these books. My Julie Anne Long collection was not going to complete itself. These three historical romances are an early trilogy from one of the genre’s best writers. Good, but not great, one can feel Julie Anne Long picking up speed and confidence as one moves through the novels. The heroines of each of the three books are the daughters of a Member of Parliament and his beloved mistress. Although never married, their parents had an exclusive, […]

If you can ignore the plot, it’s pretty good

August 28, 2014 by Sophia 2 Comments

I usually only double up my romances when the first one has disappointed me. Between the Devil and Ian Eversea left me surprisingly dismayed, considering how much I usually enjoy Julie Anne Long’s books. So I decided to give her another try with Since the Surrender (2009). If I could take how I felt about the beginning of this one with how I felt about the end of Between the Devil and Ian Eversea, I’d have a fully satisfying romance novel. Unfortunately, this one had […]
