Hollywood Noir

Everybody Knows by Jordan Harper

August 30, 2026 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Jordan Harper is a writer I’ve been hearing a lot of positive things about lately, mostly from podcasters. Harper has written for TV in addition to his novels and it seems he has a lot of friends and fans in the industry. His latest novel, A Violent Masterpiece, came out earlier this year to great acclaim, and I decided I should give him a shot. Then I realized I already owned an earlier book on Kindle (I buy too many books on sale on Amazon.) Everybody […]

California Soul-less

Everybody Knows by Jordan Harper

January 20, 2023 by Jake 2 Comments

Much like Deepti Kapoor’s Age of Vice, this is an early 2023 novel that came with a ton of hype. Being a big crime fiction fan, I’ve been hearing about this book for months, not just from publishers who make it their job, but from other mystery writers. It was billed as the modern day Chinatown, the new age Los Angeles noir. I knew I’d probably enjoy it but wasn’t sure if it could live up to its lofty billing. It did. Oh my, it did. What […]

But They Made Up Their Minds, If All Roads were Blind, They Wouldn’t Give Up Till They Died

She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper

July 5, 2021 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

Brutal and beautifully written, Jordan Harper’s debut novel, She Rides Shotgun, hooked me before the end of the first chapter and was hard to put down even as I wanted to look away.  The body count is high but so was my investment in the main characters, eleven-year-old Polly McCluskey and her ex-con father, Nate. When Nate shows up at Polly’s school, Polly knows something is off because she thought her dad was still in prison.  What she doesn’t know is that her mom and […]

A book worth re-reading

March 13, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Another contender for favorite book of the year right here. She Rides Shotgun is kind of like an urban crime thriller mashed up with an old school western. Think of True Grit meets Veronica Mars and you’ll come close to the feeling of this book. As a superfan of badass literary girls, it will surprise no one that I enjoyed this immensely. Polly, eleven years old and a bit sheltered, gets picked up from school by her ex-con father unexpectedly one day. Turns out her […]
