Expanse run starts…now

Strange Dogs by James S.A. Corey

March 23, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

And so starts the run of Expanse books after I finished watching the TV show. Having finished the books, I’ll stick to my original premise that the correct order is TV show then books, and I’ll fight anyone who disagrees. For this novella in particular, I’m not sure I’m particularly fond of either the TV adaptation or the novella. The TV adaptation suffers from one of the classic traps–child actors who just don’t do it for me, but on whose shoulders rest the weight of the plot. […]

A final book that does this wonderful series justice.

Leviathan Falls (The Expanse, #9) by James S.A. Corey

December 29, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I cried, because I am nothing if not predictable. This was a good ending, but I’m not sure five stars worth? Also, I’m not sure what exactly happened there at the end. Mostly, I’m even more excited to do my full-series re-read in 2022. I did all of these except #4 on audio the first time through (because Jefferson Mays didn’t originally record that one) so I spent 2021 slowly collecting the paperbacks in preparation for my re-read (I also will be purchasing the 10th […]

The Expanse expands on what it got right

Caliban's War by James S. A. Corey

March 1, 2021 by slisenbe Leave a Comment

I listened to Caliban’s War on Audible. First things first, the performance was fantastic. If you’re into audiobooks, I highly recommend this one. As for the story, I found Caliban’s War to be superior to Leviathan Wakes in part because of the superior cast. It replaces the cop-talk/narrative (not my favorite troupe) with politics, which I found to be an amazing improvement. The addition of Chrisjen Avasarala was a superb upgrade. She is by far my favorite character in the series (a foul mouth grandmother? […]

One of those books I kept taking breaks from because I didn’t want it to end

Nemesis Games by James S.A. Corey

February 15, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This books are just THE BEST, and they do the amazing in which they enhance an already great TV show (I will completely caveat that I specifically hold off on reading until I’ve seen the show, I’m not saying that the show is better but I am very into the Spectacle and the work that’s gone into the show. Now that the show is openly going to end after the upcoming sixth season, with noted deviations from the books because real world humans are terrible, […]

An enjoyment of sci-fi was awakened by Leviathan Wakes

Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey

May 19, 2020 by Mobius_Walker 2 Comments

I will start by saying that I typically do not enjoy sci-fi, but I found it hard to put this book down. Leviathan Wakes primarily follows the Jim Holden, former military officer turned private captain of water transport ship, and Joe Miller, washed-up detective who doesn’t know he’s past his prime. Holden and his ragtag crew members start an interplanetary war after his ship is attacked. Miller investigates a missing persons case across multiple planets at the center of said war . Together, they discover a […]

“We need no introduction, for mass annihilation

Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse: Book 1) by James S.A. Corey

March 2, 2020 by Bea Pants 2 Comments

This series of books already has a well loved television adaptation that, I believe is still in production. I gave it a try when the series premiered and I had trouble getting into it.  Still, people raved about the source material and it doesn’t take much to sell me on a SciFi series especially when you throw in the words “space opera” so I picked up the first two on sale.  The first installment absolutely lives up to the hype.  It’s an engaging combination of […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
