Remember when Avasarala asked Jules Pierre-Mao if he needed to go to the potty? What a great moment in literature.

Caliban's War (The Expanse, #2) by James S.A. Corey

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 16/30 Again, liked this one more on the second read. Once again, my previous review is gobbledygook. This review isn’t going to be anything special because I’m forcing myself to write it. I’m starting my re-read of book three tomorrow and I don’t want there to be any emotional cross-contamination. (Especially since I have a good feeling I’ll be five starring #3 on re-read.) Like the first book, I enjoyed myself with this one a lot more […]

oh wait there’s more!

Auberon by James S.A. Corey

May 27, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

These books are just a hair too short to really get your mind into the Expanse mode. They’re almost best read rapidly after finishing the novel that directly precedes it, so that you’re already ‘there’ and don’t waste any time. In that sense, I read it in the wrong order, because I didn’t realize that it existed until after I finished Leviathan Falls. That being said, knowing the ending of that book makes the story of Auberon (and every other Ring Gate world) that much more resonant, in […]

Sad to see it end :D

Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey

A quick story from my childhood: when I was a kid, right after I saw Pokemon: the First Movie, I was super taken with the story of Mewtwo. Now, I think anyone with half a heart can empathize with Mewtwo, who was basically minding his own business with his clone friends before they all DIED and DECOMPOSED and he was woken up to be a sentient weapon. This is relevant because I then wrote a story in a space-y alternate universe in which I was […]

Persepolis Rising by James S.A. Corey

May 27, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

From reading reviews it seems like people went into this a bit more shocked of the Rising part of this novel–which is to say, the main plot point ([the rise of the Laconian Empire]) came as a bit of a shock. So I will continue by pointing out that this was NOT a spoiler for me, having watched the full TV series and coming to the books after the fact. Perhaps you can stop reading if spoilers are a thing that you are seeking to […]

From 3.5 stars to 5 stars on re-read. Congratulations to me on hypothesizing correctly.

Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse, #1) by James S.A. Corey

I have lost all objectivity in regards to this series. I knew I would like this better on re-read, but I didn’t anticipate just how differently I’d feel. I’m bumping this up a full star from 3.5 to 4.5, and rounding up past that to five stars, because as previously mentioned: objectivity, gone. Haha look at my first review below. I have very different things to say now! The weird thing is, I can remember being the person who wrote that review below, but I […]

this book is just the best part of the best series

Babylon's Ashes by James S.A. Corey

March 23, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

I can absolutely see why the series had to end with this book, and I can see why they adapted things they way they did, and I can see why the next books have a time skip forward. I really do understand, I am a reasonable mature adult. But. But but but. I just wanted more? MORE. Babylon’s Ashes is the culmination of six books that ask a different sort of sci-fi question. Unlike authors like Becky Chambers or series like Star Trek, which ask, “How humanity could be, but […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
