Fairies, A Forest, and A Knight

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

July 12, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well there was just too much happening in this standalone. I loved the idea of a world where fairies stand alongside humans and magic is real. It was also interesting to hear how our history and music stayed the same so you get some funny pop-culture comments here and there. That said, Hazel and Ben were exhausting. Both of them obsessed with being in love and I just wanted to say good grief none of this is going to matter when you are older. I […]

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

June 3, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

When Jude and Taryn were children, a strange man showed up at their home, claimed their mother was his wife and their older sister Vivienne was his daughter. For the betrayal, the man murdered their parents and took them away to his home: the High Court of Faerie. As daughters of the High King’s top general, Jude and Taryn have been raised very well as part of the gentry, despite their mortal status. This means that while they wear the best clothes, enjoy an education, […]

Be careful what you wish for

The Wicked King by Holly Black

May 25, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

Spoiler warning! You really don’t want to start this book without having read the first book in the series, The Cruel Prince. It’s also pretty much impossible for me to review this book without spoiling parts of the first book, so if you’re not caught up, skip this review until you are. Seriously, even the book summary from Goodreads is pretty revealing. Look away now or suffer the consequences. You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring. The first lesson is to […]

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

February 25, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I like Holly Black’s writing. She she sets books in, basically, our real world with fantasy tweaks, and the stories are unapologetically confident in defense of myth and magic. The Darkest Part of the Forest is set in and around an ordinary town called Fairfold with a supernatural attraction: there is a faerie boy trapped and hibernating in an unbreakable glass coffin in the forest, symbolic of the town’s close proximity to the Fae people. Generations of residents have built lore around the boy and […]

Playing catch up on my faves

December 25, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

This year kind of got away from me. I didn’t realize that my last review was all the way back in April. That feels like decades ago honestly. I was noticing that almost all of my favorite books from this year got read after that, so I wanted to catch up a bit with reviews for some of my favorite 2018 books. Despite the lack of reviews, I’ve had an extraordinarily good reading year. Soooo many books and a good chunk of them were 4 […]

A Sparkling World of Intrigue

September 12, 2018 by Lisa Bee 2 Comments

I’ve read a few of Holly Black’s other novels dealing with faeries which were alright but not bad, and hearing good things about The Cruel Prince, I figured it was worth a read! And it was quite an entertaining YA novel, though I can’t say that I loved it. The Cruel Prince begins with three young sisters living in the human world: two twins named Taryn and Jude, and an older sister who is actually half-human-half-fae named Vivienne (or Vivi). The three live with their […]
