The more I think about it, the worse this gets

February 16, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The more I think about this story, the less I like it. At first read, The Cruel Prince is a pretty standard supernatural fantasy for teens. It’s got the Fey girl raised human and two human girls raised Fey, and all 3 are sisters. Taryn and Jude are the human twins, and VIvi is their slightly older Fey half-sister. Vivi of course prefers living as a human much to her Fey father’s annoyance, while Taryn wants to fit in with the Fey, and Jude isn’t […]

Starring a super special heroine who sucks

I expected to enjoy Tithe a lot more than I actually did. A YA book promising dangerous fairies would normally be exactly the kind of thing I’d read with glee, but the rushed writing style really didn’t work for me. Sixteen year old Kaye spends her life moving from place to place, tagging along with her wannabe rock star mother and going to work rather than school in order to pay the bills that her mum is incapable of financing. When her deadbeat boyfriend attacks […]

I’d love to be a Fairy’s Child

When Jude was seven years old, her life and those of her sisters, were irrevocably changed. Lord Madoc, the Faerie King’s general, showed up on their doorstep, intent on claiming back his long-lost heir and Jude and Taryn’s parents were murdered as a result. Madoc took them and his daughter Vivienne to Elfhame, where they were all raised as part of his household. Most humans in Elfhame are servants (or even slaves) be-glamoured not to realise that they’re trapped in a magical realm. That Madoc […]

Potter Adjacent

The Iron Trial is the first book in series by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. I’m a fan of Holly Black, but I’ve kind of avoided everything by Cassandra Clare because I used to read Fandom Wank back in the day and she just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. However, this book was on sale a while back, and it looked interesting so I picked it up (also, I think Holly Black was listed first and I didn’t see Cassandra Clare’s name at […]

I’m Super Emotional All the Time Because Someone is Cursing Me. Yeah, That’s It.

I’m not sure if this is just going to be a trilogy or intended to be a longer series? In any case, I just finished reading the three books (so far!) in Holly Black’s Curse Workers young adult series (titled White Cat, Red Glove, and Black Heart). The premise is interesting, and draws the characters into a world of crime and corruption that I haven’t seen in exactly the same way in other YA books, though some of the typical tropes and characters definitely come […]

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave (Cannonball!)

4.5 Stars. I’d seen some glowing reviews of this book on Cannonball Read, so when it popped up on my library list as available, I immediately downloaded it. I went in not knowing much about the book, but was pleasantly surprised to be reading a great addition to the great canon of vampire literature. This is the first truly modern vampire book I’ve ever read. True Blood and The Vampire Diaries got halfway there, but The Coldest Girl in Coldtown takes it to the next […]
