Everyone needs to drop what they’re doing and read this book

Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher

June 13, 2016 by Andrea Krieter 1 Comment

Rating: 5/5 Summary: When Eric’s friend longtime friend Sarah Byrnes stop speaking, he’s confused and desperate to help her. The only problem is no one knows why she stopped speaking, one theory revolves around the burns that mar her face and hands. Eric is not only worried about his friend, but as he finds out more about why she’s being silent he begins to question what friendship truly is. This is paralleled by discussions in his Contemporary American Thought class. I love Chris Crutcher. I’ve […]

Adorable YA Rom-Com Alert

To All the Boy's I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

January 13, 2016 by Halbs 1 Comment

High school comedies are my jam. As a child of the 90s, movies like Can’t Hardly Wait, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, Get Over It, Bring It On, Stick It, and Dead Poets Society are my jam. Books like Space Station Seventh Grade (Jerry Spinelli’s first novel) and This Side of Paradise were formative. Even though I’m a bona fide adult now with a family of my own, I still have a soft spot for movies like The DUFF and Dope. The appeal […]

Supernatural high school drama isn’t all that different from regular teen drama

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

December 9, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

Sophie Mercer is a witch and because of the various bad incidents her magic has gotten her mixed up in, she and her mum have moved a lot during her lifetime. After Sophie seriously misjudges the oomph of a love spell at her current high school’s prom, and there is a huge scene, Sophie’s normally absentee father, a European warlock of some kind, gets involved. Sophie is sent off to a boarding school. On a remote island, where she will stay until she graduates at […]

“I wish for the thing that is best for me.”

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

July 4, 2015 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

My first introduction to Stephanie Perkins was last years’ holiday anthology My True Love Gave To Me, which she both edited and contributed to. Her story,  It’s a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown was my favorite of the group and I find myself thinking of its characters, Marigold and North, every so often six months later. Her characters were vibrant and their dialogue rang true. It really was a lovely story and I’m hoping that her contribution to 2016’s Summer Days, Summer Nights is a continuation […]

March (Book 1): An Origin Story

March (Book One) by John Lewis

September 30, 2014 by NTE Leave a Comment

What’s hard for kids to recognize – hell, what’s hard for people to recognize – is that we’re living through history right this minute. That, someday, there’s going to be a kid, bored of his mind, doodling in the margins of his brain tablet (or whatever space technology kids are learning on in the future), barely listening to his teacher drone on and on about ‘the geopolitical ramifications of US drone strikes in 2014’ or – in deference to today’s book – ‘Let’s compare and […]

“I want everyone to meet you. You’re my favorite person of all time.”

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

May 14, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

I want everyone to read you, Eleanor & Park! I have so spoiled myself over the past few weeks, reading brilliant wordsmiths like Rainbow Rowell and Laini Taylor whose emotive descriptions are devastatingly apt. This book is ADORABLE. It seems like almost everyone I knew in high school fell in love exactly like this; teenagers have a way of each feeling uniquely disenfranchised, and meeting someone else who complements your weird and loneliness feels like finally the universe has done you a solid. Eleanor and […]
